Are these spinels reasonably priced?

Is it OK to point a torch on a gem while filming? It would totally increase the luster and change the color. That alone would make me very shy.

@kindred I totally forgot that I inquired about this stone before finding mine!

https://rogerdery.com/gems/red-spinel-oval-1712023/

I trust Roger 100000% to cut beautiful stones, and I know he has a great return policy. I'm not sure if its "ok" to post the price publicly, since the website says "inquire", but I'll tell you it's under 4K. Just as an anecdote about Roger, he once sent me multiple blue zircons so I could decide on one after seeing 3 with my own eyes. It was very generous of him and I recommend him often.

Thanks for the link. Really great gems. I can't find any info on treatments, not even on his sapphires. Is that possible with an experienced trader, or am I missing something?

No idea if you are still looking for a red spinel, but this one was posted today on FB (I can't link it because FB won't let me copy the exact link. Here are the stats and pics.

Mogok Unheated Red Pink Orange Spinel 2.25 cts
6.75x7.05x5.7mm
Quality: VVS (eyes clean/have rain bubbles and 2 silks) open color

USD price is 1200 ish (I think!)

Thanks! I am definitely still looking. I was hoping to find something 8+ mm but that color looks nice and the cut looks good.. Do you think I'll be able to find something that large or should I compromise on size?

@lovedogs that spinel is gorgeous. I'm a sucker for a nicely cut stone. Oddly enough I'm not too caught up in the whole super ideal cut for diamonds but I can't resist a gorgeously cut CS. Weird.

"open" colour makes me worry it might be lighter than in the pic though. I'm wary of "open" colour descriptions.

This is a photo under ideal lighting. I am only worried that the stone will look darker in real life.

The color in the ebay picture is beautiful! It's not what I am looking for, but it it's gorgeous.

Very strange about it being on facebook for a different price. I suppose it could be the same seller trying different price points.

It is hard to tell -- as that vendors photos can be difficult to read. As to the price, it is better just to remain agnostic. People flip stones (buy and resell for a higher price, or sometimes readvertise the stone and simply complete the purchase if they get a suitable buyer). So it can be difficult to know what is happening. Sometimes US buyers even appreciate this kind of go-between mediating the sale: as the person reselling the stone offers a return policy which allows the end consumer to return the stone to a local US postal address. Or the seller may just chose to list it on different platforms for different prices. Or it could be coincidence (this seems unlikely to me, but still possible especially as the colour is so different in the two sets of
photos) and they could be different stones. I think it is not worth dwelling on, beyond noting that the stone might not be stop light red and the seller may have some interesting practices.

@kindred I asked the seller I got my spinel from if she has others in your preferred color and size. She sent me 2 videos I wanted to pass along in case you're interested.

3.18 and 3.03 ct, and the larger of the 2 has a lotus report. I said you wanted to stay under 5K, but the 2nd certified one is slightly out of budget (granted I didn't ask for any details or exact pricing, so I'm not totally sure what "slightly" means).

Just wanted you to know in case you're interested!

Thanks, @lovedogs! Do you know dimensions or anything else? It's hard to tell if they might be too dark in person. They look nice and large! Of course, I am leaving on vacation tomorrow morning and I can't even get the videos to load on my phone, but they do load on my computer.

Have you received yours yet? Just wondering how true the pics/vids are to the real thing.

sorry, I don't know any other details, but happy to ask if you want! No, haven't gotten mine yet, but I'll definitely let you all know how accurate things are once I do!

Just wanted to put these out there as an option!

@lovedogs, You are so kind! If it isn't a huge imposition, I would love to see some pictures in more natural lighting.

No problem! The vendor said that those videos were taken in natural lighting without any other light sources. Obviously I can't verify that he/she is telling the truth, but just wanted to let you know I asked :)

Can you find out the dimensions of the spinels, too?

I just asked, but sometimes it takes a bit since this vendor is in another country (I forget where exactly, but Asia I think), so the time difference means its hard to catch him/her at exactly the right time.

@kindred just heard back from the vendor. The sizes are the following:
7.8 x 8.5 x 5.4 (for the 3.18 ct)

8.6 x 7.9 x 5.5 (for the 3.03)

Thanks so much! They are nice sizes! I'm confused though- do both have reports or just one? Are they going to send you any pics?

Does anyone else want to give an opinion on how these might look in person?

Just the 3.03 has the lotus report, not both. I think they thought the videos were enough--do you want anything specific in terms of other pics? Yeah, unfortunately I honestly don't know how they would look in person--just what I've seen from the vendor.

EDIT. The vendor got back to me in terms of pricing, and it's definitely over your 5K budget--more than 1.5x. The 3.18 is 3800, and the 3.03 with report (which vendor says is brighter and better color) is much more. Btw both look nice, but I think the lotus report plus being a more vivid red is why the other one is so much more expensive.

They look so similar in the videos! The 3.18 is in the top video, right?

Do you know if they accept returns? If so, what country would I be mailing to? I'm in the US and don't have any experience with this type of thing.

Yup, the 2nd video is the 3.03. They do accept returns (I asked about this for my stone), but I believe you have to request the return within a very short time period (7 days, maybe)? But if it comes back from a lab (GIA/AGS) as anything different than stated then you can unconditionally return. Again, these are things they've told me, so I can't guarantee anything since I'm not the vendor. And certainly not trying to pressure you to go with either of these--just wanted to show you some nice stones from this vendor!

I know they are somewhere in Asia, but don't know exactly where. If you do end up purchasing from them, definitely go through paypal so you'll be protected as a buyer.
