Are These Tiffany Earrings Bad Value?

OK, so my SA made me try these on months ago (had to hold me down, screaming of course) and she was right, they do suit me as I have wavy reddish hair.

BUT, I am a real bargain hunter and I do not enjoy jewellery if it doesn't represent at least fair value for money. It doesn't have to be the best bargain ever each time I buy something, but nobody likes to think they were a fool. I did spend a huge amount on my Tiffany 0.25 platinum bezel solitaire, but I felt the payoff was that it could hardly be more classic, and it's something you can wear with anything and to any place.

These earrings are not a classic design but a very specific design, and they are $1,000 plus tax. I've been hesitating for months because they are just plain metal (gold). No diamonds or other gemstones. For 1k at Tiffany you can get a very nice DBTY piece in gold or platinum, so I think even by Tiffany's standards this is overpriced. But I do like them...what do you think? Such bad value that I should cross them off the list and stop wondering about them? Or future collector's piece since they are Picasso? Is 1k for plain gold just crazy?

Outside Tiffany I usually figure 1k for a half-carat piece, like my eternity ring or my diamond cross, is a fair price. So to go to 1k for no diamonds at all requires rather a leap, in my mind. But they suit me and they're different, and they're Picasso/Tiffany. Over the months they come back into mind occasionally, and I wish I could just make a decision one way or the other: that they will be my next piece or forget about them.

Size: About 1.5 inches. They have enough presence and although this is the "small" size, they are definitely not small.

Not sure about the value, though I agree my gut reaction is overpriced, but I think they're really pretty!

In my opinion, if you're talking about value in terms of quality, materials and price, they are not worth it. It all depends on how much you value the Tiffany brand, so if your definition of value is in part defined by the brand, they may be worth it to you. They're certainly not a bargain by any definition, however. That being said, they're a very pretty design, and the 18k rose gold is gorgeous, so if the price is doable for you, why not get them?

Thanks so much for the thoughts. It's a toughie, because even by Tiffany's standards I think they're very overpriced. On the other hand, I haven't seen anything like them at all, and I do think they quite suit me. The SA's point was that they sort of went with my hair, which has a mind of its own and goes all curly/spirally a bit like the earrings. I've posted a pic below of a rose gold necklace that I posted on another thread, and I'd be wearing them with this necklace. What do you think?

Good point about the value of the brand to me personally, Alisonia. Although I like Tiffany a lot, I don't blindly buy because it's Tiffany so although I respect the heritage and the workmanship, the brand doesn't mean enough to me to accept bad value. I'll have to think about it some more.

I think they are beautiful and a better value in gold than the sterling ones.

I'm not really knowledgable enough about jewelry/gold prices to comment about how "bad" a value they are...yeah, I think we can all agree they're overpriced - but they are also really unique and very pretty and you love them enough to keep revisiting them. I also think once in a while, finances permitting, it's ok to splurge on something we really love. I realize I'm doing a great job of spending your money Smith :D and obviously it's up to you - if your concern over them being a bad value is going to eat at you, then I'd say don't do it. And honestly, just going by your post, I think this might be the case. It all boils down, IMO, as to how much you love them. I guess what I'm saying is if you adore them and know you will wear them often, I think in light of that it's not a crazy-nutso price and it might be worth it to go for it!
