Can you see VS1 inclusions with your naked eye? More specifically, are inclusions like internal graining and surface graining visible? Should I stay away from a VS1 diamonds with these inclusions?

VS1 inclusions should not be an issue with GIA or AGS certified diamonds. However, with some other softer grading labs, you may be able to see an inclusion.

Usually VS1 will be eyeclean but there can be exceptions, this thread explains further. The inclusions you mention should not be visible to the naked eye but it never hurts to check by asking the vendor.

Thanks for your responses, beach and lorelei. Does it matter with a particular color? For example, can you see inclusions if the diamond is colorless, like a D VS1?

The color of a diamond should have no real effect on the visibility of inclusions. There could be contrast issues that might make inclusions seem more visible due to the difference of color in the body color and of the inclusion.

Ditto Jonathan.

Thritto to above!! I have an E VS1 and I can't see the inclusions even under 10x loupe only under the microscope!!

a. Guess I am the exception then.

got a GIA E VS1 diamond two weeks ago from Blue Nile, I manage to see the inclusions from the side. Very small, but visible in front of my low volt bed lamp light.
Had to return it, as it bothers me.

Good luck. To all of us.

If I understand it correctly, clarity is graded from the top view only in natural daylight conditions with 20/20 vision at 10 inches away.

That might explain why it was visible.

Almost always no, but there are rare exceptions...

Clarity is graded crown (face) up only.

I am sure you will receive many comments that diamonds are graded from the top, and they are, yet it is also not uncommon for some to be bothered by this.

Since you are you will need to find a vendor that you can talk with and be sure to describe the lengths to which you will go to see the inclusion, as most of us would not hold the diamond in front of a lamp to see if an inclusion is visible from the side or bottom of the gem. You may end up needing to go to only some VS1''s, some VVS2''s (probably most) and certainly most VVS1''s and of course all Internally Flawless gems.

I wish you luck in finding a nice eye clean VS1 by your definition, it will be much less expensive than a VVS2 or VVS1 and another order of magnitude less expensive than an Internally Flawless.

Wink, I think she found and ordered one from JA. A VS2 that was check out to be eye-clean by their gemologist, hopefully check out for her personally too.

Thanks ! Stone-cold !
that''s indeed the case !.

Was told the stone''s arrived at stansted, because stafff in JA has marked ''jewllery'' on the parcel, now. we''ve been charged extra 2.5% custome tax, and caused delay too.. still waiting for it to be sorted.... looking to verify if it''s indeed eye clean or not...

will keep you guys update !.
