err, Nic forgive me but, America supports imports from all over the world *because* we have the highest standard of living. If the IT sector (for example) many of whom *have* indeed, higher degrees, and much experience, (like myself, who started back when computers took up a floor of the building, and now the power of the same computer can fit in your hand) are now getting on in years, as well as having experience, and really don't want to start over at the age or 55 or so. As a matter of fact, having friends in high IT positions as well as my SO, (he's downsized as well), and realizing these people are mostly in the 45-65 age group, frankly scares me!
It's one thing to start a second or third career at 35, quite another at an older age. What do we do, start dipping into our retirement early, and know we will run out before we hit 75 or so? And lets face it, we are the grand consumers; most industries, from auto manufacturing to home purchase will suffer from this loss of income.
Folks in other career sets will soon be feeling similar cuts, just because there are so many of us now unemployed.
