ARGH! Lost one of my diamond studs down the drain last night

Well, I learned a hard lesson last night. When using your ultrasonic cleaner for the very first time, don''t rinse the basket in the sink with your .25 carat diamond studs in with other things so you can''t see one slip out of the basket and into the drain. I am SO upset. They weren''t great quality (J/SI2 non-ideal) or huge but I bought them as a 39th b-day present for myself and the money I spent I saved up for. THIS BLOWS. So now I have one crummy stud.

Anywhoo, I really want to replace them but don''t know what to do. I would really like to go to .3 carats each, but since I want ideal cuts (or close to it) in an H color not sure the timing is right.

Thoughts? Anyone?

So sorry to hear this. Usually drains have a trap or it may just be sitting in the pipe. Can you take it apart & see if it''s there?

I agree with JustMe . . . it might be stuck in the trap, just sitting there and waiting to be rescued. DON''T use the sink!!! Take the drain pipe apart and see if you can find it in there somewhere . . . or, if you''re like me, find a man to do it for you! LOL!

If your sink has a u-band, there''s a very good chance it''s still lurking in there: call your superintendent and ask him to pop by with a wrench.

Unfortunately it doesn''t have a upipe -- it''s a solid pedestal sink and I don''t think my landlord would appreciate me ripping the whole sink out to find my tiny diamond. And I (also) used the sink before I realized it had gone down the drain and wasn''t in the basket anymore

True story: I once was holding a loose diamond in some tongs and thought it would be a smart idea to walk over to my bathroom and look at the light play in the mirror. What I failed to do was close up the drain and, of course, I dropped the darn thing, tweezers and all, into the sink and the diamond went right down the drain.

I waited about 10 minutes, because I was so worked up I couldn't stop shaking, lol. Then I realized there's a u-trap and sure enough, I opened it up, tipped it out onto my hand, and there was my little friend - unharmed

Check the u-trap!!!!

ETA - mine was a pedestal sink too. Look at the pipes where the sink connects to the wall and see if there's anything you can take apart. Remember to shut off the water first!

This has happened to me twice. Once I dropped an earring down the drain; the second time, I left my necklace sitting on the vanity and the cat apparently jumped up and decided to play with it and it went down the sink (which I didn''t discover for TWO DAYS).

In both instances, I plugged the sink, filled it with water, put a bucket under the open drain trap, and drained the sink. Both times, my jewelry plopped into the bucket with the water.

In neither instance did I have to dismantle the sink; I only had to open the drain trap under the sink.

I was about to post the same thing--the first time I tried to recover a piece of jewelry (an emerald and diamond ring) I forgot this step. Big mess.

If the pedastal is bolted to the floor and wall and conceals the pipes and you can't get access to them, just call a plumber. I'm sure you could do it yourself, but if it makes you nervous, then have somebody else do it. A friend of mine had a plumber unbolt the pedistal to her sink because she didn't have the tools to do it and it cost her $40--but she did recover her pearl earring. If your landlord has a handyman, he might even do it for free.

I'm sorry this happened to you!! I hope you can recover it!!

I too lost an earring down a pedestal sink - and tried to take it apart by myself. Successfully found the earring - but had a hell of time getting it back together! May be worth the phone call for help - but don''t lose hope, mine was still there

I did this too and learned that my u-pipe has a handy little plug in the bottom, so I didn''t have to take the whole thing apart, I just had to undo that. And get it back in tightly

. Do put a pan underneath, there''s more water than you''d expect and often other yucky stuff.

Sadly my stud wasn''t in the u-pipe

It was in a crack just below the sink basin where the pipe attaches to the drain

Ok so the pipes are practically flush against the wall and I could not even get an angle in to get the wrench in! ARGH. My BF is pretty handy so I am going to see if he can take a look at it tonight. This stinks!

So sorry to hear that! No matter what size the diamond is still a lose unless you were subconsciously looking to get larger studs...

I would definitely have someone check the sink. They must have some kind of a contraption to move the sink if they need to replace the pipes or if the pipes get clogged they need to access the pipe connections. It could be still sitting there...
