The aset is showing very weak light return under the table and a lot of leakage.
The cutter ran the p2 facets too far down the stone and the p3 angles are very marginal.
This is discussed in the p3 article linked above near the end.

The center of the asscher is leaky and likely to be "dead" or muted.

Wow...after reading this [and of course those great explanatory missives from Karl that appear from time-to-time] do I qualify for a diamond nerd badge?

Just when I think I've started to get a handle on things, a whole new universe of information appears. After reading this ASET forum the first thought that came to mind was, "so they can put a man on the moon, but a consistent ASET is impossible".

Thanks for posting.

Hi Jimmianne,

I wanted to pop into this thread and add a few things that (I hope) will make your life a little easier.

First, and not that it really matters, most of our gemologists are women. I only throw that in because they like to read Pricescope from time to time themselves and when they do, they keep asking me "Why does everyone think we're men?!?!".

On the subject of mixing up the reviews and diamonds, we're just going to have to take a 'mea culpa' on that. Between taking the images, saving the files, emailing them back and forth and so on they just get flip-flopped once in a blue moon. My apologies on that.

As to the issues with the equipment and poor ASET imagery, we spent too long trying to fix bad equipment, but those days are behind us and the current setup is both reliable, accurate, and most important - consistent.

At the heart of the matter, however, is this continuing and sometimes significant contradiction between what the ladies in NYC find most beautiful and what we see in the ASET. Karl's hypothesis (I think it was Karl, anyway) that the gemologists are holding the diamonds in a way that allows light to enter through the pavilion and sku their opinion is a reasonable possibility and one I will discuss with the staff later today. In many instances, however, I think the answer is a bit more nebulous, and could range from limitations of the ASET technology, the influence of relative size, color or shape of the diamonds being compared, or simply personal preference that cannot be completely removed from the equation.

What I will say, however, that I think is most important is this: When our GG's inspect diamonds on behalf of a client, their primary goal is only to help *you* pick the best of the diamonds they are examing on your behalf. They have no financial incentive or any other influence that would motivate them in a direction other than your best interest.

All the best,

James, I appreciate your taking the time to write. My experiences with JA prove to me that gemologist opinions on JA are not tied to "selling" and I'm sorry I let that comment slip by without counter-commenting. I fear that my frustration with my search caused me to be less than kind. JA has bent over backwards for months helping a neophyte navigate the complexities of diamonds.

As I write I am wearing a beautiful RB diamond ring from JA that arrived FedEx less than an hour ago. I am excited about it. I have had excellent service from James Allen and you are the vendor I use most often. [I have primarily worked with Erika and Gary - they have been wonderful and informed consultants].

My search for an Asscher has been frustrating due to the nature of the cut and the fact that tastes are so individual. The ASETs just confused me, but I did learn a lot from viewing them and reading comments. I have found that Gary has an almost intuitive feel for fancy cuts, and, in fact, I had put a call in to him this morning to further discuss my search.

So, a loyal customer here frustated by Asschers =)
J.

Finding a good generic asscher is frustrating.
They are complicated cuts.
Sometimes your lucky and one jumps out from the pack that says for sure take a look at me in person a lot of times not.

Jim, so long as you are in this thread, what about taking ASETs the IS way, with a white background? Sure, it will probably make the ASET images look worse, but should also make them easier to read.

Hi Julie,

It's something we'll consider, but as you mentioned, wrought with its own set of challenges.
