Asscher Amethyst Too Dark To Bezel?

Hello fellow PSers,

I got engaged a month ago and have stopped wearing my RHR because it just looks sad in comparison to my new engagement ring. While I was researching what I would want for my e-ring I ended up buying an asscher cut amethyst from Peter Torraca for no other reason that I loved it with hopes of doing something with it someday. Well now that I have fallen out of love with my RHR I am starting to research ways to set it. I have fallen in love with bezel set asschers but I am concerned that my stone may be too dark for a bezel. In low light it can look quite inky, in medium to high light it throws rosy pink sparkles. Please let me know your thoughts. If not a bezel how would you set it? FYI it is approx. 8mm x 8mm and will be set in a size six ring.

How about just bezeling the girdle, leaving the pavilion totally open to allow light through? I think rose gold will be very sweet.

Excellent suggestion of Chrono's! Rose gold or rich yellow, maybe 18K?

Oh, forgot to add -- really nice ammy!!

Hello Chrono,
Thanks for your suggestions. I agree that the pavilion will definitely have to be open. I was originally thinking white gold or platinum because that is the colour of the rest of my jewellry but I really like your rose gold suggestion. I think the white metal would be too harsh of a contrast with the darker stone just making it appear darker. I think the rose gold would perhaps highlight the lighter tones in the stone.

Thanks JewelFreak! I think rose gold would look nice too.

I really like rose gold for this one! Along with doing an open pavilion, maybe you could do some surprise diamonds to give it some pop from the side view? Just a thought :)

Yes--there must be diamonds

A cool asscher bezel ring with an open pavilion and side diamonds. This one is by James Meyer.

An example of the pavilion:

Edited to add the pavilion view

Oh my gosh I have been looking for that setting all day. LOL That is exactly what I had in mind. I thought it was single stone and of course couldn't find it on their site. Thanks for that.

I think rose gold would go best with this purple amethyst. By the way the stone is really pretty.

Loving that Ammy in the suggested setting! Oooooo, yes!

I think you could go with white or rose gold for this. White will give it a great contrast and the stone is strong enough to take white. Rose will give it a warmer softer look.

I checked out James Meyer's website and it looks like he doesn't set outside stones anymore :((

I believe his son Caleb accepts outside stones and has a very similar style.

James Meyer is now retired from the jewellery business and I don't think Caleb Meyer has ever accepted "outside" stones, unless he changed this policy recently.

I think your right Chrono but it might be for the best anyway. I don't really have a budget for this project yet but I am not looking to spend a ton on a setting for this stone. If it were a blue sapphire I would definitely be more inclined to spend more. Do you ladies know where to get reasonably priced settings under $1000?

I really liked a modern looking JA bezel setting but I live in Canada and they said that they wouldn't accept the stone since they would be responsible for the taxes. I'm not really sure how that works since they didn't purchase anything from me. If anyone knows how that works it would be appreciated if you could explain it to me.

I'd go with Etsy. The following is copied from the Recommended Vendors sticky.
