Asscher Cut Earrings: 4.5mm too small to appreciate cut?

Would 4.5mm Asschers be too small to appreciate the cut/steps?

I personally wouldn't really spend all that money and time on them. I think you can get better deals on round because you can go much lower for color and clarity in earrings. I have an F asscher and I'd go for K SI2 (with strong blue if I could get them) for studs to eek out size.

Yeah, I would think so. With earrings, you're looking for sparkle and fire and people generally do not get close enough to be able to see the cuts of the stones. A friend of mine has earrings that are square of some sort and I cannot tell what they are due to their size (they are square but do not look like princess cuts...).

I agree that asschers aren't going to be all that great for earrings. I think well cut rounds show up the best on the ears.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Here's the thing, these are a gift and I know she wants "square-ish" shaped diamond studs, she has rounds. I was trying to avoid Princess cut, beautiful, but typical. Any other suggestions for a nice, not too too common, square-ish cut for stud earrings?

Cushions. But they are a b*tch to pair on your own. Your best bet would be asking ERD or GOG if they have a couple in your price range for studs. Blue Nile might have some as well, and worth looking into (I saw a pair of cushion studs that were just lovely fron BN a while back)

They are, at least, brilliant cut, so they perform more actively than step cuts for studs and aren't as hampered by oils. Usually not as deep as princesses too. No points like princesses and no steps like asschers means lower color and clarity requirements are okay too. Overall, best bet, IMO for square studs.

Also, you can get her cushion halo earring jackets to turn her rounds into squares and make them a LOT bigger to boot.

Oh, the very best choice for brilliant squarish stones for earrings would be the Brellia square hearts and arrows, Princess of Hearts, or Jubilee diamonds from Good Old Gold.

Look at the top right column under Fancy Varieties for Brellia, Princess of Hearts and Jublilee:

If you don't see a matched pair, call them, because they might be able to get a match from their supplier. There aren't many Jubilees so my preference would probably be princess of hearts.

Or he could do the little AVCs... they would be square and have very different light return than the RB studs.

Although I think 4.5mm is fine for asscher earrings if that's what she wants. I personally would do the AVCs for the bigger flashes of light even in that small size, because I'd be afraid asschers in that small size, not specialty cuts, would look glassy. But that's me.

And Octavias!! There aren't any smaller pairs, sadly. I want a pair of Octavia studs one day!

The AVCs sound like a good option too. FWIW, another gal I know has fabulous emerald cut studs but due to the simple faceting, they don't have much umph and they are bigger ones (probably .75 each ear).

How about FCD earring jackets? LTP bought a fancy yellow diamond earrings jackets from White Flash for her mom to go with her RB studs and I have to say they were OUT OF THIS WORLD gorgeous! I know she said squarish stones but jackets might be a nice option too. Just a thought.

Yes, Octavia earrings would be gorgeous! I didn't mention AVC's because I don't think they will have as much impact on the ears as the others, but I think they would be lovely especially for someone with an antique style diamond ring.

Octavias and some of the other specialty cuts would be expensive, I agree. Rounds give the best bling for the buck.

I'm probably going to be the minority here, but I think you could still appreciate the cut of asschers that size. I owned a 7-stone asscher ring from Blue Nile for a little while. They were about 3mm in size and I kick myself for reselling it... :(( They might not be as easy to see on the ears compared to a ring, but they are different than princess cuts (especially if you want a square shape and are looking for something a little more unique.) The problem with the Octavia, August Vintage, and Brellia cuts from GoG that a few people mentioned is that they're specialty cuts and come with a premium.

A 4.5mm face-up for asscher is about the weight of a ~0.50ct asscher. Blue Nile sells pre-set asscher diamond studs in 1ctw and they occasionally have sales:

You could buy the asschers separate from a retailer like James Allen (who has the some of the best prices with the Pricescope discount) but it would be harder to match them separately and it might come out just about the same price as Blue Nile's pair after getting the stones set.

Sorry for kinda ditching this thread. I really do appreciate everyone's replies. I would love to get little half carat octavias  but as everyone said it is not possible, yet :nono:

I'm the type of person that has to see these things sometimes to really understand and I have to see these little asschers in person, so I placed an order with James Allen. It should be here by the weeks end. I made sure I bought his ""ideal" cut grade to hopefully help with the lack of sparkle the asscher cut will have. I'll post in the SMTB when I get them...and maybe a "you were right" post here if I have to return them :(sad

They weren't a perfect match, but I was assured they would look great.
