Asscher Help Again - Too small?

Hi All,

I'm back again. Apparently I was looking at diamonds too big (and too much $$) :confused:

Anyway, I know she definitely wants an Asscher, just smaller.

So I came across this one at James Allen:

General thoughts? Is this too small to even appreciate the Asscher cut? For reference, her ring finger is about 5.25-5.5.

Small or not, I do not like the look of the ASET. It doesn't look good. You can guess even without looking at the ASET but at the picture from JA itself. See the huge dark area in the asscher - that's a dark area that does not go away and isn't reflecting light aka sparkle back to the eye. You want lots of red, with some green in your ASET. Some blue is all right. Yours has little red, lots of blue and green.
 
That is not a good ASET at all. And truthfully, yes, I think a .40 asscher is too small for an engagement ring. A .40 round would have a lot more visual impact. What is your budget for the diamond, and will it be going into a solitaire setting, a halo, or other?

I know she definitely does not like round :( As for setting, I was like just a pave/side stone setting
 
Aw, that .54 is really pretty. Good find, Julie.
 
Goodness. James Allen has the .53 and the .54 and then nothing between that and 1 ct. (in VS2 and higher)! With a $2000 budget, you can get a larger stone than .5 cts. I'd call Good Old Gold and have them call a few in for you. I just wouldn't settle for a $1500 stone when the budget is $2000, and the one that is almost $2000 is too high in color and clarity. You can go to G-H color VS and get a little larger stone.

His girlfriend said that the previous ones he was looking at were too large and too expensive (not sure if they were too large because they were spendy choices or just because she wants a smaller stone, though). Of course I guess that leaves the question of whether she's thinking that the actual face up size is too large for her, or if the carat weight just sounds too large (since of course asschers will face up smaller than a round of similar weight).

I agree that the color and clarity of those are overkill, they're much prettier stones than his first choice though.

And yes, she doesn't want to wear something that's too pricey or too large... we've tried on a few princess solitaires (I think they face up the same) and she liked the .5-.75 range.

Okay, then please look in the .5-.75 range. I am not sure I'd look at emerald cuts unless you have cleared that with her. I am all for James Allen when they have what the person is looking for, but in this case, I still recommend calling Good Old Gold. They found a gorgeous asscher for me and I just wouldn't settle for one that isn't really great.

Hi! I hope some of the long time PSers see this and can help you. I don't feel well versed enough in judging ASETs to voice a strong opinion.I will say I think the stone has some nice contrast.
I feel that the red on the steps will give you lots of brightness & it should be lively. If no-one else weighs in you could order it unset to see if you are happy with the performance. JA has a 60 day refund/return window. If their gemologist gave it a favorable review there's no harm in having it sent to look at.
 
So much green, not enough red. Much better choice than the first one though.
