Hello everyone-I am trying to do some research for my boyfriend who is going to look at diamonds this week...some opinions other than my own(since I am not an expert would be greatly appreciated!) He let me pick out the setting(micropave eternity no picture just yet sorry!) and the shape of the center stone, but the size of the stone and the proposal will be a suprise. I decided on the asscher, mainly because of the way it is cut...i like its clean lines and classic look. My grandmother had asscher cut earrings which I have loved my whole life, and will most likely be wearing them on my wedding day!

The jewler we are using is local who we trust, several people we know have pieces from there and are all good quality. He has not ruled out buying a diamond online aslong as they have a great return policy and of course only deal with GIA ratings. I would be perfectly happy with a 1ct asscher, but I think he is leaning towards a 1.25-1.5. I have seen the asscher in a 1.08 and 1.57, G and H color respectively and both had a VS1 clarity. There are a few options I found online for him to use as a guide when sitting down with the jeweler discussing price. I''m not supposed to know about the price, but I have a pretty good idea, since I have been trying to price diamonds for the past 2 months while we were looking! I dont want him to spend a ton of money, because we have alot of things to pay for, but hes going to spend what he wants anyway. SO there are a few options below that I would be MORE than happy with and are not too outrageously priced. I think he is considering spending 4000-5500 on the stone. If you could tell me if these seem like good stones by their specs/prices I would appreciate it!

Thanks!

Welcome Nov,

Do you have any pics or other images of these diamonds? These will be needed in order to help you.

No

They only have sample images of the diamonds I have picked out for him to use in comparison when he picks out the actual stone. He knows to make sure it is eye clean, to take a look at it under the microscope and get it appraised by an independent before the final sale. We were just wondering if the specs that are listed are true to their price or if they should be more/less.

Thanks for your help!

Hes trying to act like he isn''t nervous-but being this part was supposed to be a total suprise and I know he is. So im just trying to give him something solid to stand on when hes sitting there with diamonds in front of him :)

You are most welcome! Stormrider has a special interest in asschers and should be along to help you later, he does like to have photos and other images of the diamonds, but he might be able to help you without and give you some tips on what to look for.

Those are not good comps.
A well cut asscher comes with a premium.
SI grade discounts as they are rarely eyeclean.
Depth over 70 is discounted and unless it has a very high crown and small table is just costing you spread.

thanks for getting back to me so fast!

I guess an easier question for you would be what stone should he be looking at for around 5000?

5500 is unrealistic for a well cut eyeclean 1.5ct they are more like 8k-10k.
1ct is do able maybe up to 1.25 if you can find one.

Do a PS search limiting the depth to 70 and the table to 65 and look at the results for the stones that have a reasonable l/w ratio to get an idea on prices.

If your local guy cant come through the best option is work with a pricescope vendor to call some in for pictures.
I would recommend starting with goodoldgold.com
Stock is way down right now as they are picked over and the Christmas season stock isn''t out yet.
Jon may be able to call around and shake some lose from his choice suppliers that haven''t hit the lists yet.

Here is an online stone I have been drooling over--an H VVSI 1.1 carat. It is listed as an emerald, but it is clearly an asscher (square emeralds sometimes get listed as emeralds). If your BF is considering online, I might call JA to see if you can get an ASET of this stone. You can use your local jeweler for your setting if you buy online, too.

Here is the link

stormrider are you an intj?
The test is broken or I cant be defined. :}
It varies depending on the test but comes out intp or intj most of the time.
In reality I operate in both modes depending on the situation.
