Asscher - Please help

I am looking for an Asscher cut diamond for a solitaire in the $2800 or less price range.

I found a .5 carat, D color, VVS1, with ideal cut, ex. polish and symmetry that I was planning on getting. However, the only local jeweler who carries Asscher''s in stock suggested that you really have to go with at least 1 carat in order to benefit from the cut.

In order to do that and stay in my budget, I have to sacrifice color up to like H - J and clarity to the VS1-VS2 range, and likely cut as well.

It seems to me that a diamond measuring 4.5mm by 4.5mm with great specs, is going to be better than a diamond measuring 5.25mm by 5.25 mm (for example) with lesser quality specs. Just hoping to get some opinions from those more enlightened than I.

You could go with something around 0.9 ct in H/VS2 (wouldn''t go lower than that) for around 3K. Check out some prices online to see what you can get away with. The spread of a 0.9 Asscher will be approximately 5.2 x 5.2 mm, give or take. Likely indistinguishable from something 1.0x, unless you had them side-by-side.

One thing is, you need pictures (or better yet, be able to actually look at the stones) to pick a good asscher. Numbers really don''t tell you much.

Well I've done extensive research and found a number of diamonds. Unfortunately, it is really hard to tell without a picture what its going to look like. I also find it difficult from James Allen's website to really judge what it's going to look like.

That one looks very nice. It is a drop style asscher, which means that it will give you better contrast, and more visible patterns, in a smaller diamond. I don''t think you could go wrong with that. You are paying a premium for the high color, but it faces up more like your average 0.9 ct asscher.

The patterns look very crisp on both the regular image and the ASET. There is one blue area in the ASET in the very center on the right, but it is probably just a slight tilt. Widmills are nice-- I prefer moderately large ones, and those are about right.

Good Old Gold is known for their quality Asschers. Have you seen the Octavia? If I were looking for a 5mm step cut diamond, that is the cut I would go for.
