I am thinking about getting between 0.7-1.0 carat and I am unsure whether the 1 carat is too gaudy. I would get it on whiteflash in a tiffany setting.

edited to comply with rules! :)

Never, ever, ever is a 1 ct too gaudy. Blasphemy.

I am a small person and am going to be getting a l ct. stone as an upgrade. That is certainly not a gaudy size at all. I know size of stones can vary sometimes according to geographical location, but having tried that size on, I think it''s perfect. And the tiffany setting is classic. If I could go bigger than that I would. I know there are many women on PS who have MUCH bigger stones and love them. Since you must be new, you haven''t heard of DSS or diamond shrinkage syndrome which is where your stone starts looking smaller the longer you wear it. It''s not like you''re talking about some huge stone that''s so big it won''t look real. Sounds great.

a round? somewhere around 12 cts.

a one carat stone is only gaudy if you''re surrounded by starving children and dry wells.

hmm a gaudy round? oh 9c?

a 1c? never!

LOL you guys are funny! That''s all I needed. :) I want a big ring but my friends have suggested that 1 carat is too gaudy. But at least one of their opinions seems biased because she has a 200 dollar walmart ring.

I am glad you added the statement about the Walmart ring, bc I was gonna say that the only way yours friends would say 1 carat is gaudy is if they are JEALOUS!!!

You should get whatever size stone you feel comfortable in and that you guys can afford, whether it is 1/5 of a cart or 15!!

Hope you shoot for 15.

Yeah. That said it all. Honey... you should have Seen my FSIL''s faces when they saw my ring. FMIL''s diamond is bigger... but all of her daughter''s diamonds are TINY (even the millionare''s). I heard... ''waste of money''... ''too big''... you name it.

But you know what? FSIL#2 got a bigger diamond that year. FSIL #1 started wearing her grandmothers MUCH bigger than hers heirloom diamond ring the NEXT week... only FSIL #1 didn''t get a new one. I think she bought a third house instead though...lol.

Gaudy? In some circles anything over 4 carats is considered gaudy. In others... well, nothing is considered gaudy. Your circle-- IMO is you and your fiance. If you love it and he''s fine with it... get what you want.

Puddy, One carat is NOT gaudy at all. There are some sizes (yet to find one haha) that might be considered less than classy, BUT I think it depends on the wearer, the setting, etc...so have no fears and ENJOY it!

1 carat GAUDY???!!!! WahnuhlaHUH??????

No. It will be lovely!

What is your finger size?

sorry!!! I thought it was kind of iffy to post that but I didn''t bother to read the rules. I''ll be good!

Puddy, you are on a diamond forum. Therefore, we members may be biased in the sense that it takes a pretty big diamond to look gaudy to us!

And, what is too big to one is perfect for someone else...so it is a bit relative! But there is no world, to me, where a one carat is gaudy...

it depends. what city do you live in?

Minneapolis

Is a 1-carat too gaudy?
That's a question that only YOU can answer.

We are an online community.
Some of us are wealthy and live in Dallas, New York or Beverly Hills where a 1-carat would not catch anyone's eye.
Others have more typical incomes and live in the heartland where a 1-carat would have tongues wagging all over town.

Get what YOU feel comfortable wearing in your community.

If you have the budget for a larger stone than you feel comfortable wearing you could bump up the color or clarity.
True, only you would know, but it may be meaningful to you to have something more rare.

Or you could sink the extra budget into one of the high-priced prestige brands like Eightstar or Hearts on Fire, though I think Whiteflash ACAs are perfect while still being well-priced.

Hi Puddy ~

When I think of "Guady" ... images of chunks of ice that are often refered to as "frozen spit" all scattered with clumpy prongs!

Now, if your talkin' a great quality diamond that is perfectly cut
emlove.gif
, proportions excellent
emthup.gif
, color and clarity are balanced
emthup.gif
.... sparkles like crazy
emsmiled.gif
... It wouldn't matter if it was 5 ct's or .50 ct's ... This would most definately not be guady by any means. Simply speaking, a classic beauty!

I bet your friends wouldn''t think 1 carat was too gaudy if they had a 1 carat stone.

It''s IMPOSSIBLE for a well cut diamond to be gaudy!
9.gif

1 carat should be a large stone for minneapolis. go for it. in houston it''s smallish.

I think I see where you''re coming from although I think a one carat would be lovely.
I live in an area where most people have under a half a carat. There are people with larger but the largest I''ve seen is a carat and a half which of course looked huge to me!!! It''s not unheard of to see a carat but it''s not common either.
I know I''d get looks from my friends and family if I upgraded to that size but only because it''s not something they would see very often. Plus most of my family and friends think diamonds are a complete waste of money....
Get what you want and you feel comfortable wearing. Find a size that looks good on your hand by going to the jeweler and trying on different size diamonds. Good luck!

I am in the UK and a carat is hardly ever seen, let alone my over 3 carater!
23.gif
However, I really don''t think about what anyone else thinks, I love my ring and prefer a large diamond. A carat is a lovely classic size and not large IMO so get what your GF feels comfortable wearing. In the States it seems larger diamonds of 1.5 carats plus are more the norm than here. Plus you need to allow for shrinkage
31.gif

A 1 ct stones would be lovely, not gaudy at all, especially not in a beautiful classic setting like you're considering.

In my mind gaudiness is in the setting, not the center stone.

I agree with the setting - some can be gaudy IMO with chunky settings with clusters of diamonds, thick bands dripping with diamonds and bells, whistles, all shapes of diamonds crammed on every mm of spare space
23.gif
and a diamond of any size on top of all that can be gaudy.

Not that I mind pave etc or diamond bands in general such as we see here - those are classic and gorgeous. I can't think of anyone here who has a ring I would consider gaudy, PSers have great taste
