Baby gear -- what is really necessary?

Dani, how old will DS be when your parents begin to watch him? I ask because the swing can be such a short-lived thing...especially if you have a baby that sits up early or just grows bored of it. We used the swing with DS until he was just shy of 6 months. Our friends borrowed it and accidentally broke it so now we're in the market for a new one. We're thinking portable too because, with a two year old, we have virtually zero floor space left! We're considering these:

Our first swing was Boppy brand. We really liked it and I see they have a travel swing online but I can't find it in stock anywhere. Wonder if they're discontinued or recalled...

My list of stuffs to get before baby gets here would be:

car seat
crib/mattress/plain sheets
diapers (don't get a ton - my DD got horrible rashes with one brand, and we had to switch)
wipes
clothes
cloth diapers, to be use as burp clothes
baby carrier (as in ergobaby, mei tai, etc)
nursing tanks (for breastfeeding moms)
muslin swaddling blankets

Everything else can be bought on an as needed basis once the baby gets here. I would do the research and pick out the one you like, but not buy it yet. So you don't have to do the research after the baby is here and you are trying to get into the groove.

Pupp, he will be 5 months. I totally get what you're saying. Im going to wait until it gets closer to that time to purchase anything. I want to wait and see if he will still even fit in it, considering he is already 16 lbs, and the weight limit on most of the swings is 25!! Im sure he will, but :o

Lulu, that's strange. MH just called a few wks ago and was given a whole song and dance about how they need all this documentation including an indication/diagnosis for the breast pump as a necessity. We also have BCBS, maybe its just different that yours in terms of coverage? I just told him what you said and he is going to call again. THX!

I'm finding that insurance companies are pretty clueless about how it all works. I'd call back again now that it's the beginning of the year and see what they say.

I have BCBS, but through a state coverage (not federal). I did call towards the end of last year to verify about pumps. We are talking about the requirements from the Affordable Care Act, right? That requirement is what I asked them about, and I hope I'm remembering this correctly... I was told that there is a grandfather clause that if you've already had your plan for a certain amount of time (a year maybe? I can't remember) that the company is exempt from that coverage requirement, and that mine would not be offering coverage. Not even for manual. :knockout: Shouldn't surprise me.

luvthemstrawberries, it's the same where I work. We have BCBS of IL and pumps still aren't covered in 2013 because our plan was grandfathered in. My employer did not make any changes to its coverage offerings for employees this year, hence how we were grandfathered in. It never works in the other direction. Our rates still increased this year. I would love to call and say "Sorry, I'm grandfathered in to the old rate because I didn't make any changes to my coverage. Thanks."

Ditto! I'm a state employee, and while every job has its flaws, one of the advantages has always been the benefits. But we started having to pay for employee-only coverage last year (a first)... I agree, if they're going to use grandfathering as an excuse, it should apply across the board!

Thanks for the bump!

FYI: Diono Radians RXT are on Albeebaby and Amazon for $219. This is a GREAT price. I bought ours for $289 a few months ago.
