I recently ordered my wedding band from Barmakian''s Boston store - My fiance had bought my e-ring from their Framingham location last year, and felt it was a good overall experience.

I bought the ring up-front, and had ordered a custom-sized platinum eternity band, with approximately 2.56 carats of princess-cut stones around the channel setting. I paid in advance, and asked that the ring be shipped to me out here in Indiana, where I have recently relocated. I''m a Boston-transplant, and will be married there in September.

The appraisal arrived Friday, and the ring arrived yesterday - I was in shock to see the poor quality of workmanship, and that the ring was NOT PLATINUM, but 14K WHITE GOLD - with a 14K stamp in plain view to prove it. Not only that, but the ring has been obviously re-sized from a larger, used band. I took the ring to a jeweler to verify my suspiscions, and called Barmakian''s today as soona s they opened. I spoke with a man whom I don''t know yet (my salesman was on his day off), who ended up asking that I return the ring via registered mail, and give them a chance to correct the error.

I''m pretty horrified. At this point, although I believe in second chnces, I am more inclined to demand a refund, and bring my business to another jeweler. I am not confident in mailing the ring directly without a member of my family to accompany the ring to the store and demonstrate in-person that the stamp is plainly visible, and that the craftmanship is pretty sad.

Advice, please? I have alreayd contested the charge with my CC company, but where to go from here???

Very upset, still. Thanks in advance.

That's completely up to you. If you decide to return it I don't see why they'd object, unless returns are specifically prohibited on your sales receipt. And even then, given the circumstances, I can see them making an exception. OTOH, they probably won't mess it up again. Still, it's really up to you and your comfort zone.

Personally, I'd ask them for shipping number and make THEM pay for the shipping.

Wow, what a terrible experience! There's an old post on this site about Barmakians that has a number you can call to get any issues resolved. If you do a search for "Barmakians" it should come up.
I'm glad to know about your experience because I was considering having them custom make a wedding band to go with my new engagement ring, but I hadn't decided yet what I want. Now I'm hesitant. I've always shopped through the Nashua Barmakians, and I've only been into the Boston store once and wasn't impressed.

This sounds like somebody else's ring... I bet Barmakian wants it back by now. It would be such a sorry trick otherwise - almost hard to believe

However, they can also accuse you of switching or damaging the piece at this point (and in theory). I would make sure I have their consent that they indeed accept the piece and responsability for it's current state - which the should.

This is the post I was referring to... she's from the Nashua store, but she seems eager to help. Maybe you can get in touch with her and get some advice from someone within the company.

I'm sorry this has happened to you, I'd be spitting nails too!! Just wanted to say hello from a fellow hoosier!!

Jaime

Hi Indiana - I am very sorry that this happened to you. I do know that feeling when you open the box and look at a hideously dostorted ring - but this sounds like it wasn't even your ring! Let's hope your horrible experience paid off and they will not that other guy recieve the ring in that condition!

YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR SHIPPING!!! They should at least have made it clear that they will reimburse you for the expense. Registered is the way to go becuase it is safest and you can put huge insurance on it without it costing a fortune. It protects you! So, don't think about them on this issue. (I recently sent something insured for 5k and it cost $17.00 registered and almost $100.- insured Priority Mail 2-day)!

Also, the post office requires that you use special tape for sending boxes via registered mail - it is hard to find! It is paper tape and they should have it at the post office - if you are lucky you will get someone friendly who will tape it for you. If not, I suggest going back another day until someone will tape it for you! I haven't the foggiest where to get this mystery tape!
It will take longer to get there but you can also have a signature required and signature confirmation to protect you more and let you know when it has arrived.

I hope they know where your ring is and that you get it soon. More importantly, I hope it comes in better condition than that!
The store should really do something to make this up to you and not somthing that makes you go back to their store - but a true gesture of apology! Best wishes with it!

Not sure where you live at in Indiana but I also live in Indiana and I'm in the process of purchasing a stones and the rings from Groeninger's in Evansville. Very high quality stones at very resonable prices. He has a web site but but you can't get on there and look for stones. If you live anywhere near Evansville I would highly recommend you talk to him. www.groeningersdiamondcutters.com

Thanks - I am not near Evansville, actually - I'm in Indianapolis. I have pakcaged up the ring & sent it registered mail back to Bston, to my Mother. She has agreed to go into the store for me, with all the documents, to voice my complaints in person to the gentleman with whom I spoke today. Hopefully, they just screwed up & sent me the wrong ring. We'll see.

Hey Indiana are you as knottie? I saw this post on the Boston board just recently?

I'm glad you found this site. It's an amazing tool. I hope it all works out for you. Good lcuk!

Hey Jenibear - I am indeed a knottie.

And yes, that was my post on the Boston boards. I am somewhat relieved to report that the ring is on its way to my Mother in Beantown, who will go to see the gentleman I spoke with on the phone this morning at B-makian's. Also, in researching this site, another poster was kind enbough to fwd the name & number of someone affiliated with the merchant's Nashua, NH location, who functions as a service manager. She was incredibly forthcoming, and genuine on the phone, and provided me with MUCH reassurance that this problem would be resolved in good stead. She assured me is was a big mistake, and they would take full responsibility for it, as well as correct the whole thing. I am quite relieved - let's hope I stay that way, and that the new ring they make up is even more beautiful than the one I never got to see.

Not a happy ending YET, but hopefully it will be.
