Because of onyx inlay in wedding band, resizing a challenge

While at a jeweler fixing my wife's engagement ring (resizing it down for her...), I'm going in the other direction.

The jeweler did cut the band off of my finger that had a diamond at the front, and onyx inlaid at the left & right. I understand I will need to go from about a size 9 to size 11. I think the jeweler that did the cut, on first thought, was not optimistic about sizing it up, and showed me other rings to consider.

Taking it to jeweler #2, when it is shared a second time that I'd like to keep it, he suggests he might send it out for a confirmation, but thinks a shank can be added to allow me to keep the ring as is.

Based on both the estimate of cost ($275) and preference to keep the original ring, vs getting a new simple (preferred) band ($600), it seems the effort to try to keep the original band is the way to go.

But, am I fooling myself? No one's yet confirmed it's possible. We're talking a yellow gold band.

Any good intelligence here about options...except that I should loose weight?

Thanks,

Ira Z.

Re: Because of onyx inlay in wedding band, resizing a challe

Can you post a picture? I would think the solution is to summarily redo the inlay as part of the job. As in take it out as step 1, size it, and then cut new stones. Onyx isn't very expensive so it's basically all labor. Decent lapidaries are a little hard to find but I wouldn't be surprised if there's someone over in the Colored Stones forum who can provide a referral if your jeweler doesn't have one. Unless you've got a lot of pieces or they are oddly shaped, this shouldn't be all that tough a job.

Neil,

Thanks for weighing in. I'll try to post pictures now.

I do know that, in the solution set, at both Quest and then Jareds, we mentioned the idea of the onyx being replaced if it wouldn't survive the adjustment, and in each case, some language was used to discourage this solution...but I was not strongly affirmative about pursuing any solution set.

Hopefylly the picture(s) will attach...

P.S. I've tried to upload twice, and doubt it's worked...but I'll try again; I may need help, we'll see...
