Best and worst (non-round) shape for earring studs?

Rounds (be it MRB, OEC or something in between) are usually the go-to for earrings. But if you had to pick a different shape, what would you pick? And what is the one shape you would never, ever choose?

Mostly just a discussion question, but I've been ruminating on picking up a pair of much smaller studs, leaning mostly towards ECs for now because they are my favourites, for travel purposes or just when I want to be more discreet. Curious to see what you all think!

I think if I could find them I’d pick square French Cuts because I love them. Next would be asschers or square emeralds. I probably would not go for marquise studs and I’m not a hearts fan so not those either.

Whatever shape, the post has to be in the middle, because if it gets off-center from my piercing hole, i get a lil batty ;0

Thus, I prefer elongated/heart/marquise shapes to be on a drop, or dangle, that way they are always the correct orientation.

Agreed that Marquis would be my least favourite. Something about the shape is not flattering on the ear imo. Marquis looks the best as a pendant, or perhaps a ring. Hearts though, look nicer as studs than I expected though not my fav either.

Square emeralds or asschers are great! I love the broad flashes of step cuts! In the smaller sizes (sub 1ctw) though I think a more elongated emerald could also look nice (face up a bit bigger I’d imagine).

I never actually answered my own question actually. Favs would be emerald cuts (or asschers), least fav for me would be Marquis and/or pears (though I love pears as rings or pendants).

Asscher would be number one pick then EC. I also prefer the other fancy shapes as drops/dangles. My least favourite is marquise, however I love the cluster Harry Winston style.

Oh I’m the same, I need the post to be centred! It would drive me bonkers otherwise.

I think pears make the best drops! But I personally like big drop earrings only, not small drops. I think it’s because I have big lobes and long and thick hair.

Step cuts seem to be a popular choice! I agree that for a single stone stud, marquises don’t work; but they look lovely in clusters or flower etc designs, like the Tiffany Victoria earrings, I think they’re called?

I would choose a square over rectangular.

I have 2x rounds, 1x princess,m and 1x rectangular green emerald gemstone - a baguette cut emerald gemstone. When the earrings spin, the rounds stay round. The square shape goes diamond shape. The rectangular shape does odd things. It bothers me a bit. But in the whole, I rarely see them until I am in front of nitro and adjust it.

My next goal is an asscher set of earrings. Heheh.

I would absolutely never do step cut earrings. I have an emerald cut engagement ring that I adore, but they look dirty so fast! And I don't take my earrings off and clean them very often.

It would depend on the brilliance. I have seen really large princess stones that do not sparkle at all. I guess they weren’t that well cut. Emerald or Asscher cuts if they sparkled would be my pick.
I’m not a fan of marquise as a solitaire.

Oh that’s a point I didn’t even think about! How quickly they would get cloudy and dirty. Though I take my earrings off every day before sleeping, so I could just clean them more often than I do…

Now that you mention it, I feel like princess cuts are also quite popular for earrings. I have seen them on people before quite often.

I feel like ECs and Asschers don’t really sparkle, they flash. But that can almost be better from an earring perspective!

With you on the Marquis thing. I think they’re quite unpopular for earrings.

I wonder why earrings spin when they’re attached closely to one’s ear!

I have to say that I don’t know whether it would bother me to see them spin and go wonky shapes. I don’t think it would, but before I commit to a pair of earrings I should probably be sure.

Asscher earrings would be gorgeous!

That is a great question to ask.

I have never given much thought of what would cause them to spin.

It bothers me a little, but not to the point that i have anxiety over it, or have to check in the mirror every 5 mins to make sure they are sitting correctly. I reason to myself that they have moved / are going to move/spin and if they are in a different position to when i had them in the morning when i see it during the day in the mirror (cos that is the only time i would notice it); then, i correct the position. It is not a real big issue, cos i don't know how long that earring was not in the same position as i had placed it in the morning.

However, since you had asked how an earring would spin when it is closely attached to the ear, I had a bit of a think.. and, i came up with the following...

note: it isn't an exhaustive list and not all of it has happened to me. just thinking off the top of my head...

1) phone use- especially if using the phone against the ear. or putting ear phones/ airpods in/ out of ears
2) brushing wispy hair away from face and tucking it behind ear/ redoing hair/ hair getting caught on the earring and you just brush hair away, not really give a moment's thought about the earring. I wear mask, and this happened this week: the loop got caught on the earring and i unlooped the mask and didn't think to check the earring at that time. but the earring did move position/ spin.
3) re doing make-up- the brushing around the side of the face then lightly touching ear?
4) shower/ shampooing of hair in particular long hair.
5) blow drying hair and the hand brush, brushing past ear
5) passionate event
6) how loose/ tight the earring back is secured to the post
7) taking glasses/ sunglasses on/off
8.) exercising and then wiping face with arm/ towel to get sweat off
9) the size of the ear lobe, position of the piercing, size of the stud
10) use of headphones
11) hair band repositioning
12) if riding a bike and the bike helmet is used- the action of putting it on, and taking it off
13) taking off sweater/ layers of clothing that involves pulling item over head
14) taking seat belt off carelessly, and the seat belt catches the ear, or ear hits the head rest?
15) lying down for a nap with earrings in
16) swimming in a swimming pool with lane ropes, and swimming too close to the lane ropes and your ear brushes past it... it happened to me and it bent my earring post, and stretched my ear piercing hole. So sometimes, during the day, the earring on the right ear drops a little and it doesn't sit at the same level as other side. When i notice it, i correct the position, It isn't annoying enough for me to have corrective surgery. and you would think that this ear would be the one that would have the earring spin the most, but, the spin of the earring happens to both ears.

Worst: marquise

Best: marquise

Looking at the marquis from JA made me have a thought - I think marquis solitaire earrings would probably look great in the second/third piercing!

Oh these are all great points. I don’t wear jewelry while sleeping, showering or exercising; so earring movement at those points is out; but I do have long hair and I’m always fussing with it; plus masks etc. But I also agree with you that I don’t think it would necessarily bother me if they become askew. I’ve certainly never noticed on anyone else before.

Due to the shape of my earlobes and the position of my piercings, I can only wear round or roughly round shapes with the posts in the centre of the earrings.

Hearts are fine, however, elongated shapes such as emerald cut, marquise and baguettes, pears are no good for me.

DK :))

I have enough space around my piercing to accommodate any shape, I think, but maybe a more “concentrated” shape is more flattering than an elongated one. Hmm. I’ll have to think about it, or try something on! I’ve gone back and forth several times.

Someone I know has EC ear studs. They are beautiful, but they are always slightly misaligned. If this would bother you, I'd lean towards asscher / round / square cushion (ie something that can spin on its axis and still look "straight").

Due to health and safety issues/concerns, earrings for pierced ears cannot be tried on in UK.

In addition to shapes, I can't wear anything that sit high on the earlobes, hence no big round pearls for me, as they make me look like a chameleon with budging eyes when I wore my hair short.

My hair is slightly longer now, and I may be able to wear those large pearl earrings again.

I’m wondering if the most straightforward solution is to just order some cheapie CZs in a square and rectangular shape (not concentrate so much on faceting for now) and try them on and see. I don’t think the misalignment would bother me, but I don’t want to drop 1-1.5k and then realise that I don’t like the way they look.

I’ve only ever tried on / purchased jewelry in India, and here there’s no problem. They just disinfect the posts between customers.

Pearl studs are lovely and elegant! Give them a try again - I’m sure they’ll look great!

Great idea. You'd have to wear them throughout the day to see what your ears do to them. It may not bother you, but every time I see this person I can't concentrate on our conversation, as the urge to reach out and straighten her earrings is so strong...

Haha well that would be quite an unanticipated externality of these earrings!

Well, I have 1.5ctw pair of L colored round studs (champagne-tinted sparkle bombs) and then a pair of 1ctw white princess cut studs that are reasonably sparkly. I wear the princess pair nearly as frequently as I do my rounds...so princess is probably my first choice if I CAN'T do round. It's a classic enough shape, IMHO, and can look different if I rotate them to the kite orientation.

I think I'd love heart studs, too, and will probably seek some out eventually. I know that shape isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I've always liked them.

Marquise would be my no-go, along with any step cuts. Marquise is a no because I just can't picture them not driving me nuts when/if they spin. The step cuts are a no due to me having long hair, using a ton of sunscreen, etc etc...I'd never be able to keep them as clean as I want to!

HI:

I'll be the lone dissenter and say that my Tiffany Victoria earrings are stunning. Marquis :kiss2: . I probably would not buy ovals for studs, but certainly for a drop style.

In short, nothing would be off the table for me.

cheers--Sharon

I’ve seen quite a few people wear princess studs, they do seem to be a common second option after rounds! I guess it’s because it’s kind of similar to a round in terms of faceting and also “concentrated” instead of elongated.

Actually this makes me think: how would oval studs look?

You make a good point about keeping step cuts clean. I also have long hair and I wonder if I’m actually going to be able to keep them as clean as I like, but I also just prefer step cuts! Such a dilemma.
