so im looking for a diamond for an engagement ring...and im having trouble determining the best bang for the buck.

here is what im thinking about so far....all at 1 carat

ideal cut/vs2/g is $7800

ideal cut/vs2/f is $8200

very good cut/vs1/f is $7800

and the whole 'go look at them and see what you think is best' thing doesnt really apply here....im basically a diamond idiot and they all look fine to me. my gf, thats different. she is in design and deals all day with color variations, so she may be more sensitive than i am

so whats the best combo to look for? am i close with those? or am i way off base

well i already know everything short of the exact combination of color vs clarity, etc

but that link you posted is very helpful, thanks

are cut labels vendor applied? who is vendor?

a well cut F/G VS2 sounds good to me. :appl:

G VS2 is my own personal sweet spot for color and clarity.

after looking around, i started giving bluenile a serious look

i already got a pair of diamond earrings from there and was more than pleased

one of my friends just picked up an engagement ring from them a few months ago, and it was beautiful

and their prices are spectacular

blue nile does not have pics of their diamonds (or ASET/IS pics) but they have a generous return policy

yea the no pics thing sucks....but as you said their return policy is supposed to be good, and ive been very impressed with them twice already

maybe consider other vendors that have pics?

honestly the no pic thing doesnt bother me that much.....they are a highly reputable company and the two times ive seen their product, its been excellent

i just am having a tough time coming to a price point, when going up or down one level has a $750 effect on price

You just have to weigh your priorities.

Mine will not be the same as yours.

ditto. have you seen colors in person?

also with a drop shipper like BN no way to verify if SI stones are eye-clean. SI1 is much cheaper (here are some before discount prices for comparison...all are WF ACAs)

1.055 H SI1 5885
1.023 G SI1 6203
1.013 H VS1 7268
1.018 G VS2 7617
1.003 G VS1 8130

ETA just for comparison, nothing wrong with sticking with BN or with the higher clarity grades.

I think I read it somewhere on PS that for a 1 carat stone going up/down a color grade or clarity grade was about $1k.

(someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Also, well cut stones usually face up whiter then poorly cut stones. So, G/H is very common amoung PSers. Some even go
lower to get the size they want. Dont sacrifice cut because thats where your sparkle and brilliance will come from (no matter
what color the stone).

Edit - for me best bang for you buck would be eye-clean SI1, G/H (but thats me).

I think BN is safe with VS2 and above clarity. I would not risk SI without someone seeing the stone for me first.

yea i know well cut stones always look better, which is why im mainly looking at ideal (the only higher on bluenile is signature ideal)

im kind of leaning towards VS2 instead of VS1, and F instead of G.....since she works with colors, shes probably more apt to see color variations than inclusions which are only visible under a loupe

is that kind of decent thinking in this situation?

I think an ideal cut F VS2 would be a wonderful diamond for you.

thanks for the help everybody!!!

Just a note on BN ideal, they are not necessary the great cut as they are just based on grading report cut grade. GIA Ex cut grade allows for some proportions that are not that great.

Use this to weed out the lesser performers. https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

yea i was putting a few of them in there, pretty interesting
