Hello all, I had a question regarding where to buy the best loose diamond for my engagement ring that I will be purchasing in the future. Let me be honest, I'm broke. Very broke. My price range is somewhere between 750-900 for just the stone. I was looking at different 0.5 carat marquise cut stones and found the cheapest in my range to be SL2 with D,E,F,G color, usually the stones being d-f.

Now I want to by a good stone and most of the ones I've found have been on blue nile meet what I"m looking for but, I'm afraid the lower price on those Sl2 diamonds means they aren't eye clean of which is a big concern for me.

I came across RAPNET.com and was curious about it. I was wondering if I choked down the $60 a month subscription if I would actually be able to buy cheaper diamonds. I legally own a business that makes hand-made jewelry and I think I could get access to the site for that purpose. For the purpose of both, would I really be able to find diamonds there that are what I"m looking for and are actually cheaper? I've never purchased diamonds for the handmade jewelry though, I've had requests before. I really just make it for friends and family that have seen my work as a side hobby but, it is technically a legal business though I make less than 2K a year doing it and I don't have a website or really show off my hobby.

Advice on both would be greatly appreciated.

In all honesty, if you are 'very broke' a diamond is the last thing you should consider buying. Seriously. Taking a subscription to rap.net won't find you a diamond at a lower price. In order to buy that way, you have to be very educated about what you are doing. It's a great way to lose a lot of money on a not so nice stone.

When you've saved some money for a diamond, contact one of the PS vendors and let them know what you have in mind and what your price range is. They will work with you to find the best value for your money!

James Allen has quite a few marquise diamonds that seem to fit your specs and there are photos on the web site. It's at least a start...

I don't think it's impossible...you may want to look second hand (like on eBay or diamond bistro) or perhaps going smaller like .40 ct. Do you plan on making the setting?

If you are open to buying pre-owned, there are a lot of good deals to be found.

Here are a couple options:
round halo - http://diamondbistro.com/category/216/Natural-Diamond-Center/listings/31729/Fiery-Edwardian-to-Art-Deco-Old-Mine-Cut-Diamond-R.html
marquise - http://diamondbistro.com/category/204/Wedding-sets/listings/31575/Marquise-Diamond-Ring-Set-150-ct-734-grams-$900.html

I do agree with MissGotRocks though that if you are broke or near broke, or at any rate don't have a surplus lying around, you should not be buying a luxury item like a diamond. Even if it is for an engagement ring.

Is the $2K before or after the $720 annual fee plus taxes you'd have to pay on that income? Doesn't sound like it's profitable at this time.

With your budget, for sure look into the preloved diamonds/used/second hand because you can find some great deals.

I agree with that budget I would buy second hand. Has she asked for marquise?

She has asked for a Marquise stone or at least hinted at it very obviously. She also likes the heart stones. I really don't care where I get the diamond, pre-owned, new whatever. In all honesty I'm looking for something that is 0.5 carats, Marquise Cut, Depth 60-20, table 50-60, preferred ratio of a 1.9-2.0 (looks bigger to me), VS2, no cutlet, no fluorescence, very good or ideal cut, with at least good symmetry and polish. Creeply enough, Blue Nile has it, for $7xx but its an SI2 and the low price makes me think it isn't eye clean.

All opinions are greatly appreciated. As for those who say don't spend the money, the jewelry making is a hobby not a steady income source. I have a part-time job, full time accounting and marketing student studying for my LSAT to go to Law School after. Cut me some slack please.

Yes, and honestly I'm just looking for a solitaire marquise.

Good luck on the LSATs

Blue Nile is a drop shipper. They don't even know the quality they are sending you. Selecting a marquise requires special attention. James Allen or eBay seem like your best bets to finding the perfect stone.

Your best source for a larger marquis stone on a small budget would be previously owned on EBay. Here are some auctions: That 2.2c is the best buy but over your budget. I think you could find a nice 1c marquis on ebay for under $1,000. But I would buy this pink marquis now.

If you want a great investment diamond I would buy this ARGYLE pink marquis 78 points 3/4 carat.
These diamonds are outrageously expensive coming from the Argyle mines and rare....absolute BEST diamond
investment on Ebay IMO...note someone is asking what is the “buy it now” price! If I had the funds I would
“buy it now”. Good luck! Take your time and keep browsing Ebay and you will get a larger stone at a great price on a budget.

In response to those ebay listings, all of those stones were clarity enhanced an ungraded with guesses made by their posters. I wouldn't buy an uncertified diamond. I was simply looking for good second hand places to buy one but most of the places I've found are simply people asking more than what they paid or what they paid. I'd rather order the same ring myself before buying it for the same price someone else paid for it. I was GIA graded diamonds. My favorite is the pear shaped diamond with 2 sapphires next to it, I convinced my fiance to look at other stones covertly and accidently had that one come up. She loved it. They have it on James Allen and Blue Nile but I think the setting looks better from Blue Nile.
