Hi all
What would everyone recommend as the best setting choice for an active athletic girl?
I’m not gentle but want a classic, very sparkly still, Ering.

should it be bezel?
Half bezel?

solitaire only?

would love to hear all recommendations:)

The most protective setting would be a bezel solitaire, set low, on a band that’s not too thin. If that doesn’t sound like what you would like perhaps pick and choose elements from the list below:

The following things help add structural stability to a ring:

- bezel (if you go for a prong setting I’d recommend 6/8 prongs for a round, and tab prongs / v prong if you have a stone with sharp corners or clipped corners). A milgrain bezel can add a nice design element if you find a regular bezel too stark, and I’d suggest a thin one to not overpower.

- cathedral setting (more secure than a peg head), plus it looks very pretty.

- donut (I’m not sure it’s necessary if you have a cathedral setting but it does add structural stability).

- band not thinner than 2-2.2mm (2.5+ is best especially if the centre stone is sizeable).

- no pave (can fall out if you’re rough on your jewelry).

- set low or medium (I think stones set medium height are best since they’re not so high as to be obstructive, but not so low as to appear smaller than they should. Sure it’s technically not as safe, but if you pile on the other factors I think you can get away with setting at medium height).

You can also explore the idea of a ring shank that tapers from the back to the front, so it’s even thicker at the back and tapers to (not less than) 2-2.2mm in the front.

Looking at this question from a different angle, as a fellow athlete: you may want to focus more on “when” to wear your ring, than on finding a ring that can withstand your athletic activities. Even a low, bezel set solitaire will be at some risk depending on your preferred activities. I fell once while running and dinged my non-engagement wedding band pretty badly on the pavement, (and weightlifting is even more risky). For myself, I found it much easier to avoid compromising on style (I didn’t want to be limited to bezels and so on—just not my preferred look) and just compromise by not wearing my diamonds during any vigorous activities where the ring might get damaged. I have a super cheap plain white gold band I wear when I’m running or working out, and I never worry about falling/whacking/damaging it, or getting approached on a trail somewhere by someone trying to take my valuables.

Now, if what you mean by “active” is that you’re also complete klutz like me, and you’re continually whacking your hand into doorframes and bashing it against tables and stuff... I suggest low setting height and 6 substantial prongs. My original setting was 9mm off the finger but the prongs were so sturdy that I bashed that setting on everything and never had a hint of damage. When I reset it, I went with 4 thinner prongs, but dropped the height a few mm, and now it’s low enough that it doesn’t get knocked around as much. It’s a tradeoff!

This! I work out intensely 6x per week and just don't wear my rings when doing so.

Thanks everyone.
I run a lot and do yoga, not a ton with weights but I’m not gentle and always banging my hands on stuff it seems.
I have two little ones and am often sledding, at park, etc,
I want to wear my ring all the time so with that said are their suggestions or photos you could share with me.?

it seems bezel, what about half bezel or is that too open?

i hear you on mid to low profile.

would someone be willing to show me an ideal setting for what I want?

not 100% bezel and limited but something that meets both durability and also will let my stone sparkle as much as possible?

I’ll add I want a round stone. As large as possible with lots of sparkle, don’t we all, lol.
It will likely end up being between 1.1 and 1.6 depending what we can find.

Just an example, but sholdt does amazing half bezels that are low set but still let the diamond shine.

This version has more diamonds down the side if you prefer that look

Full bezel but open at the bottom to allow light and make cleaning easy. Plus the milgrain details are gorgeous IMHO.

Ps. Another style that could be nice is a "wrap" setting. No prongs and metal protecting the stone, but still fluid and feminine. Green lake jewelry does great work and has a whole gallery of examples.

Ohhh, love the milgrain bezel (#3 in first post) that Lovedogs posted! Modern, elegant, and great for an active lifestyle! And won't break the bank, either.

I was going to recommend a bypass/wrap setting too if you're not keen on a full bezel. My e-ring is a repro of the one below. I'm super klutzy and have knocked my ring around plenty. But fortunately, 8 years later, it's still in surprisingly good condition! At least, according to a new jeweler I've started working with.
