I was wondering which gems make for the best rings? I have been browsing the forums but could not find a thread that specifically called out which stones are ok for daily wear? I am sort of looking for another project to give my wife maybe a trillion or cushion cut.

For an everyday wear ring, stones harder than a 7 on the Mohs scale are recommended. These include

chrysoberyl (cat's eye, alexandrite, and regular chrysoberyl)
spinel
corundum (sapphire and ruby)
and of course, diamond

For occasional wear, stones around a 7 in hardness are suggested, as most garnets, tourmalines, beryl, quartz.

Under a 7 in hardness, stones should be worn with care, and not very often IMHO. Tanzanite is one of the most popular stones in this category, and I feel far too many vendors should not be selling it in rings or bracelets, as many people are unaware of the risks.

Just to make your head spin more, don't forget to take into consideration stones with perfect cleavage, brittleness and thermal sensitivity. Daily wear can mean many things to different people. Some remove their rings once home, others wear it 24/7 and some wear it not doing much at all.

Exactly what I was looking for, Thank You very much!

Sorry for the 10,000 questions there are to many variables to wing it..

Sure they would be. Now just because a gem is durable doesn't mean you should go digging ditches with it, doing tons of housework, shoveling snow, playing basketball, but spinel is pretty durable. Even diamonds chip, but you should be relatively safe wering a spinel in a ring for frequent wear. I would still take it off at night though, and not wear any ring 24/7.

I can't add any suggestions to stones for rings but I think either spinel would look great in a ring.
