Cleaning Tips
An important step in making your jewelry look its very best is the cleaning process. However, different pieces of jewelry require different cleaning procedures. It is important to us that your emerald jewelry looks its best so you will be proud to wear it.
Not all emeralds are the same.
Although emeralds themselves can withstand most standard jewelry cleaning actions, the enhancement that was used to improve the emerald’s appearance will fail, with a notable exception. Therefore, you are limited to taking your emeralds to a jewelry expert to have them clean them or simply limit your cleaning to a clean and soft cloth wiping.
We do not recommend using a toothbrush and baking soda, toothpaste or any of the popular cleaning approaches used by the public – for emeralds or any other jewelry or gemstones. Small jewelry cleaning kits, consisting of a jar, screen-like plastic ladle and colored liquid cleaning solution (suspiciously smelling like ammonia), are not an acceptable a cleaning solution for emeralds. It is better to limit use of these kits for diamonds, sapphires and rubies and not pearls, mother-of-pearl, amber or emeralds.
What about the notable exception?
Emeralds enhanced with the ExCel™ process can withstand both steam cleaning and ultrasonic baths – as often as one wants to clean the emeralds. In fact, ExCel enhanced emerald come with a lifetime written warranty stating they can be cleaned in either the steam cleaner or an ultrasonic bath. Remember, it is not the emerald that is fragile but the unstable enhancements – a problem that does not exist with the ExCel enhancement we use in each and every emerald we supply.
