Thought I'd start a thread just for fun where we can add photos of BIG gems! I have no idea what consitutes "big" but decided to photograph a few of mine that are over 10ct.

Please add yours ...............

Photo 1 = Kunzite 22.11ct
Photo 2 = Cuprian Tourmaline 18.34ct (lab report calls this Paraiba Tourmaline). Fairly heavily included.
Photo 3 = Tanzanite 18.56ct
Photo 4 = Citrine trilliant 64.50ct (looks like fanta!) and Citrine cushion 49.10ct (much more marmalade/red/brown colour)

Photo 1 = Group shot of gems featured above and below. Look how tiny the 18ct Tanzanite looks  This was a nightmare to photograph as the gems kept sliding off my hand!

Photo 2 = Amethyst flower cut 21.66 (horrible and dark), trilliant 17.37ct and emerald cut 43.59ct

Photo 3 = Amethysts and Ametrines (largest ametrine is 84ct)

Ooops forgot to add these:

Fluorites = From left 14.93ct, 17.91ct and 18.70ct

These look better on a white background to showcase their colours so if I ever set them I'll have to do something inovative with the basket!

Wow! I want to come over and play at your house!

I didn't know you collected doorknobs, LD. Some of those are fantastic. I love big gemstones and you have lots of them. Very cool. Good pics as well

You bet! Me too. When are we invited? As much as the stones -- can't decide which I like better than the next! -- I admire your steady hands, holding still w/those on one hand & keeping the camera from shaking around in the other. I could never do that.

   Do you think the Citrine trilliant might be a bit too small for a ring?

*hides my little stones*

I think the biggest thing I have faceted is 6cts. I mostly do have minerals of large sizes, because they tend to not cost as much. whoooo LD, those stones are something else!!

that citrine.. yeah its a bit small. You'd have to halo that one.

I took all these tonight and rapidly ran out of patience as they rolled around my hand! I gave up trying to get them all head on in the end so there are some horrendous tilt windows on show! It was virtually impossible but I wanted to get hand shots for perspective.

Of course! Problem solved! Now all I need to do is open my own diamond mine to find enough diamonds for the halo and voila, job done! What do you reckon - should I send it to Leon Mege? :wink2:

LD ~

Thank you for sharing. Wow! I wonder if I will ever even have a gem of pendant-worthy proportions.... Still, a thought keeps rattling around in my head: if I am just going to end up spending $$$ on diamonds and fancy metalwork for setting smaller stones, why not just but the larger gems to begin with?!?

Well LD,
Those aren't stones, those are glaciers!!! Were you around when the Titanic sank?

Here's my 63 carat rose quartz cut by Uli Zeisberg in Germany. I also have a large fire opal in this thread, but not as large as the rose quartz.

Fab stones TL. Please upload the picture into this thread of the two of them together so we've got loads of photos to enjoy!!! BTW I think your Rose Quartz also needs a halo because like my Citrine, it's not quite big enough!

Here you go!

Thanks TL. How big is the Fire Opal?

Almost 15 carats. Thanks LD.

I remember both those stones, TL. I like rose quartz and fire opal both and both those are fantastic

LD, that is a huge tanzanite. How clean is it did you say? Color looks like a very rich blue

here's my ten pound carnelian

Now that's what I call BIG! Perhaps a bit on the large side for a ring???

I have seen you post that tanzy before..i know that must have cost a pretty penny..you sure do have an envious collection :twirl:

The citrine makes it look like you have teeny tiny hands :)

I think you may have hit on something!

If I turn it into a belly button ring do you think it'll make my stomach look smaller? :D :wink2:

LovingDiamonds, those are huge! I really like the green tourmaline, very glowy!

Whoa! Amazing stones LD!

The only problem with huge gems is...where do you keep them?! :p

Now that is an interesting thought! I think my jaw would hit the floor if I saw someone sporting any of those stones! Where do you wear them LD?!

The ones that are set I wear occasionally. Not much though in all honesty. The loose stones I play with now and again but are just there for viewing pleasure!

You should really do a pendant with the Tanzanite LD. It's very beautiful.

Thank you TL. I did toy with the idea and found two Tiffany designed pendants and wondered about doing something similar (see below) but then, well you know, other projects pop up and ................ and then .............. oh I must set that and ............

You get the picture!
