my fiancee's ring is a bit too big. Had her try on some ring sizers. the 4.5 fits pretty well, but is a little tight to get on and needs some greasing to get off. The 5 is a bit loose when its on.

Considering we're still in March, will 4.75 be good in winter? I know fingers swell and bit, but do knuckles swell too?? as long as she can get the ring over her knuckles in summer, i think it'll be fine

My knuckles are easily a full size larger than my fingers. I get my rings sized to fit over my knuckles snugly and then I have sizing beads inside the shank. That prevents the spinning and flipping for the most part, except the dead of winter mostly. But they can't get over my knuckle bec they're sized just a little under my knuckle size.

If you size it down, it might be too tight when she is wearing a wedding band with it, as that will push it up a little and make it snugger when the two rings are together.

Ame-- does the diameter of the ring bother you, though? My SO can't stand it because the diameter would then prevent both sides of his middle and pinky fingers to close with his ring finger properly, and it drives him nuts. Sizing beads/bars won't work for us.. and I'm still iffy on the idea of arthritic shanks since it's costly and not the prettiest.

(Sorry, OP, I'm very invested in this topic as well)

so, do your knuckles swell too? since I'm sizing in march, I'm not sure if we should go to a 5 to ensure it'll get over her knuckle, or stick a 4.75 which should be about right to snugly get over her knuckle now.

Why are sizing beads and bars not an option? I don't even feel them, like EVER. But the diameter being this much bigger rarely bugs me unless it's FREEZING outside. But I don't wear my rings with gloves, EVER, not even the plain one. In the summer it's not a huge issue either, with the flux my fingers go through in a day from the humidity. Unless it's super cold/I am super cold, they don't do a lot of spinning, even with typing, since the beads are in there. When I am cold I can shove them farther up my finger towards the knuckle and that helps.

In the summer they do, and in the morning they definitely do year round. I can't get them on for like two hours after I get up, even sometimes with windex. That's just how my fingers are.

Does her ring fall off of her now if she shakes her hands lightly (do this while having your hand over the bed) or when they're wet (again, over the bed so it hits the soft bed if it comes off!!!) ? I could shake my hand violently while wet or cold and they wouldn't go anywhere but to my knuckle region, bec the knuckle is HUGEMONGOUS. Or is it just loose below the knuckle? Has she tried it on with a band yet? I would wait and make the sizing decision based on the way it fits with a band before you make any sizing decisions. You could also go down about an 1/8 size too from where you are now.

Her ring is a 5.5 right now...wanted it to be a surprise and took an educated guess.

So I am def. sizing it down. Just not sure if 4.75 will be too small since we're not measuring in summer and I don't have 1/8 size increments in our sizers. If she can get it over her knuckle, it'll be fine which I'm pretty confident she'd be able to do in winter, spring, fall...just mildly worried about summer sizing.

So she's involved now though right? I would honestly go bigger vs smaller. Go with a 5 and beads for now vs smaller. You'd rather have to go smaller later than bigger.

I have RA in my fingers and wrist so my normal finger size is a 3, but it'll swell to a 3.75 when I have a flare up. Mark from ERD suggested the euro shank and I've tried it but it doesn't work for me because my large knuckles made giants gaps in between my fingers so there was nothing for the bottom of the shank to grab onto. I ended up designing my own shank and it works for me because it's WAY more comfortable than sizing beads which are like two spiked up pressure points on my finger. We went with a 3.25 in my "V' shank design. I'm having them make it even more "V' shaped in size 3.5 to prevent the ring from spinning yet allow me to take off the ring when my hand swells.

Hope this helps! :D

This is my finger at a size 3 in the winter with no flare up. The "V" shape keeps the ring is perfectly straight on my finger even though the ring is big! :P

Can't believe I'm posting this, but my jeweler (a male) asks women if they get "puffy" on a monthly basis when he is fitting their rings! Apparently the size differential is significant enough in the fitting process that he routinely asks this question. I was rather shocked that he hasn't had complaints other than the occasional significant other male who feels he is being too intrusive. So it is not just the weather that affects this issue. One consideration is whether she is willing to stack tighter rings on top of a looser e-ring. For example the wedding band or an eternity band could be a smaller size and put closer to the knuckle on top of the e-ring. Yes, there will still be some spinning of the larger ring, but it is a compromise she could take. It is always safer to start larger. With time, typically people gain weight through the years, children, arthritis, etc. Sizing down is easier than going up.

one other thing to note...the ring sizers are thicker than her ring...and the 5.5 ring sizer had less spin than her 5.5 ring. maybe the 5 ring will feel looser than the 5 ring sizer.

the person who has helped me along through creating the ring is recommending 4.75

That is a huge factor--width--in determining size, wider feels tighter, narrower feels looser. I would say get a 4.75 full then. That's the 1/8th size between a 4.75 and a 5.
