My mom surprised me with some new pretties this afternoon for my 25th birthday!
The first present I knew about because I had a hand in it - in the early 70''s, Mom''s college boyfriend gave her a "no promise-promise ring." She''d mentioned that she wanted an opal for a promise ring, and on her birthday, he presented her with the ring, but with no "promise" attached - he''d bought her the ring just because he couldn''t think of anything she''d want and knew she loved opals. Good thing there was no promise attached, because my dad entered the picture a little while later. Anyway, I wore the ring for awhile in high school and liked it, but the setting had this weird texture on it, almost like the gold was scored (you know, like pottery). I asked her if I could have the ring around Christmas time, and she said sure, and so I dropped it off at the jeweler''s to have it resized, but it also needed some more work (the prongs needed to be re-done, they were paper-thin), and at the same time I asked if they could smooth the metal down so it would all be shiny. Then I moved (!) and kinda forgot that it was there...ooops!
When Mom picked it up, she told me that it looked much prettier than she thought it ever did...and she wished she hadn''t told me I could have it! Then while she was waiting, she found an estate opal ring that she decided she needed to own - so we both ended up with new opal RHRs for my bday this year
The second gift was a complete surprise - it''s also an estate piece that she found while at the jeweler''s to pick up the ring and I love it! I was so surprised. Anyway, I''ll just post pics...
So, here we go - opal ring first:
