My FI bought me a lovely pair of diamond studs from Blue Nile (.86 tcw) and they have gone from mildly uncomfortable to making my ears bleed.

Is it more likely that their posts are thicker than the holes in my ears (and I should just let my ears adjust)or that their white gold has an alloy in it that is the problem?

I have two other pairs of white gold earrings and neither on of them have caused any problems.

sounds like a nickel allergy too the white gold.

This actually happened to me when I got my WF jackets. It was my fault though because I was wearing them so tight (for fear I would lose them), that they left cut impressions in both ears, but the right one was bleeding.

I thought it might be that I was allergic to the white gold as well, but I decided to try loosening them up and they didn''t bleed at all. I just loosened up the backings so that I could wiggle the earrings a little bit and take them off when I sleep to give my ears a rest.

Nickel allergy, and the posts are being thicker than the holes in your ears is the other problem. You could take them to someone local and replace the posts with 14K YG. I have had to do that for my daughter, she has a bad allergy to nickel.

Thanks!

I have already tried taking them out at night (which is how I discovered that one of my ears was actually bleeding) and loosening them up so I guess the next stage is switching the posts.

I am so glad that the posts can be changed without having to change to whole setting -- I had thought that my only choice was to get them reset into yellow gold or platinum.

i would think that if the only problem is bleeding it is not an allergy. if it is allergy i think there would be itching, redness and or swelling. the bleeding would then come as a result of the irritation. this is my experience and i have been allergic to nickel since i was a small child first wearing things that would result in the reaction. hth.

Hi Cayce,

My posts were too thick on my earrings too and had to be changed - should not be too big of a deal. My daughter is also allergic to gold and I had to have all her earrings dipped in platinum. That took care of the problem!

It could be either one that is causing you the discomfort. If the posts are larger than your other earrings, your piercings will eventually stretch and adjust to the size of the posts. If it is an allergy, it will not get any better without changing the posts. There are some WG earrings that I can wear just fine and others that cause discomfort. I have the same problem with silver. Good luck, I hope that this gets better for you!

Are the posts screwbacks? I tried on a pair of screwbacks, and found the posts to be thick and scratchy. So, when I purchased my Blue Nile diamonds for stud earrings, I had them set locally with platinum pushbacks. More comfortable, and as a bonus, much cheaper than what Blue Nile charged for setting.

Yes, they are screwbacks and I suspect that is as much (or more) of a problem than the composition of the metal.

I am going to have the posts changed.
