So, I get this email this morning for the stone I have listed on DB. In response to below, I've already told him that I can't give out my bank info. Help me understand why people like this can't use PayPal. Thanks!!

"Thank you for the quick response, i would like to make this purchase as soon as possible, unfortunately i wont be i can make a paypment with paypal but i can certainly make a deposit to your account first thing tomorrow morning or overnight a cashier check, i will wait till you receive the cash in your account before shipping. please advise further

i await you response.

Many Thank
Benjamin"

@Starfacet I got the same thing! I was just about to write a similar post. The email address they wrote from was [email protected] and the name they attached was Benjamin Thompson.

This is a scam!

Email 1:
"I hope this msg meet you well, i am interested in this Jewelry, your asking price seems like a fair bargain but does it comes with the appraiser? please write me back at your best convinient .

i await you response.

Many Thank
Benjamin"

Email 3:
"I appreciate your concern regarding your update on paypal, be informed that once have a paypal but my account is Resctricted/Limited . Let me know if we can proceed with an overnight cashier check. You will only ship after money clears in account."

I received no more responses after providing links from PayPal on how to remove the account restriction.

My response:
Hi Benjamin,
For safety reasons, I cannot give out my banking information. Do I understand correctly that you cannot use PayPal?
Thanks,

His response:
Yes you are right, i cannot your Paypal at the moment however if you permit me i can overnight a cashier check, i will wait till you receive the cash in your account before shipping. Let me know if this is fair enough, i will need a payee name and mailing address for Fedex Overnight. We will discuss shipping after you you receive your Money. Please advise.

Many Thanks
Benjamin

So bizarre

Yep, same dude!!

I got the EXACT same email today twice. I told them that I only take paypal, no exceptions and no further discussion. They asked me to "hold" the item, which I am ignoring. I assume they realized that this wasn't going to work, and moved on.

I got the same on a smaller item not listed here or on LT. I guess i’m a dummy. I did not give banking info, only address for a cashiers check after receiving his address for shipping. Cashiers check is tracking to me by fedex - will let you guys know if I receive payment / it clears. I already said I wouldn’t ship until it did.

He is across the country from me so hopefully I don’t need to be concerned. I don’t think one can steal ID with just a name and address.

Yes, I pushed on PayPal and even created a PayPal button to pay just for this individual

@endless_summer, I'll be curious to know how it works out. Did he give his full name as Benjamin Thompson? Did you look up his address and see if it's a residence or legit business?

I faced some sort of this scam before ! Plz ! Do not deposit this check to your account ! I don’t remember how it exactly works , but when you deposit it ,they somehow can find your account number and take money from your account , or it will show pending ,you will send an item , and then it will bounce . If only you can cash it right away , but still ,I will not advise you to play his games o_O

Yes, Benjamin Thompson. I didn’t think to look up the address. I may just write and say that I am uncomfortable going through with the sale and that I’ll be returning the check. Either of the above potential outcomes are not worth it.

I would not sell to someone who is not taking the time to be specific about their generic “purchase” and cannot form a grammatical sentence.
They are likely a scammer and you will at a minimum waste time and money when their funds “bounce” and at worst be out the stone and the fund bounce fees.
I would not use paypal from a scammer either . Paypal often sides with a buyer even if a snad claim is bogus

Probably when you endorse it.

Name matches the address in people search, and address is found on Zillow as a residential home. But I can verify the DB telephone number. Anyone can put a fake name and address.

Can people outside of this forum just be honest. I feel bad. Is the same possible just cashing a cashiers check without depositing? I’m just curious, but it all sounds like bad news bears / best call is to walk away, ship check back.

Just informed the individual that I will not be able to accept and will not deposit the cashiers check and will not be able to move forward with the sale.

Thanks Starfacet! (I meant can’t verify the telephone number, but you understood that ;-))

The scam can be complicated ie Identity theft but the usual format is that he will send you too much money In the Cheque and then say that he needs you to pay the insurance broker or shipping company $X via Western Union.
The cashiers Cheque will be a fake and get dishonored by your bank (and your bank is likely to charges you fees for this) but you will have already send off your own real money via Western Union.
That’s the scam, they don’t actually want your item, they just want you to send them money via Western Union.

this is interesting , I had no idea there were scams involving Cashiers Checks. Though to be honest I haven't heard of anyone using them for years.

Wow, I've learned so much from this thread! Thanks to everyone who contributed!
