A day or two ago, I purchased the pink tourmaline
30.gif
in the attached picture (from AJSgems.com). Here are the stats:

- 14.9 carats (18.2 x 14.2 x 10)
9.gif

- "Loupe Clean" (whatever that means)
- Step Cut
- Unheated/natural
- Origin: Nigeria

I''m getting married in August - our wedding colors are pink and green (and white), and I thought as a wedding gift, I''d give my fiancee a piece of jewelry with pink and green gemstones, and maybe diamonds or some other white stone. I''m having a tough time deciding exactly what to do, though. I''d like it to be something she can wear during the wedding, and possibly also something she would be comfortable wearing on a pretty regular basis afterwards. Basically, I''m considering the following things:

1. Matching pendant and earrings

2. Necklace (this would likely be the fanciest option, thus something she probably couldn''t, or woudln''t, wear regularly afterwards - but there''s something to be said for fancy, for sure
31.gif
)

3. Right hand ring

In terms of finding some green stones to match, after examining all sorts of different stones, I''ve arrived at the conclusion that the best look to match is something like a peridot, a yellower green (this is great, since peridot is so cheap!). Immediately after this post, I''ll post some pictures that I''m drawing inspiration from, and you''ll see why I think periodot matches best (which is the green stone in all of those pictures).

I would appreciate any thoughts any of you have concerning:

(a) The stone itself - from what you can tell, does it look like a good color, cut, stats, etc. (I realize there is limited info and only one head-on picture, but I do calculate the depth at approximately 62% if that helps). Would you consider this a "collector quality" gem?

(b) Does the size preclude me from any of these options (such as the RHR)? Would a 15 carat pear look weird as a ring (~ size 6 finger)

(c) What suggestions do you have for design ideas?

I obviuosly want this stone to be the focal point, but I want to accent with probably peridots and diamonds, like maybe a halo (on a pendant or ring), or something similar. Perhaps even something like a 3-tier bezel pendant where the first stone is the periodot, then a diamond below it, then the pink tourmaline at the bottom.

Anyway, I would appreciate any thoughts, ideas, inspirations, photos, or anything else any of you are willing to share.

Thanks so much!

PS - for the ring, I was thinking about a split shank micropave type deal, with a diamond halo/outline, like this pink diamond pear RHR; but I''m not sure how I would add green accents - perhaps alternate diamonds and periodots around the halo, or use periodots as two side stones (in which case a halo probably doesn''t make sense). Thoughts?

Also see this necklace (can''t download the pictures, they''re protected), which has a matching set of earrings.

I definitely would not do a ring with a stone that size because tourmalines chip easily. I don''t have a problem myself with wearing a huge honker of a ring (I have several), the problem is that one knock against something and you''ll probably chip it. The larger the stone, the more prone it is to chipping, even if you''re careful.

Beautiful stone!!

How about a diamonds-by-the-yard type necklace with alternating diamonds and peridots and that huge pear in the centre?

Gorgeous stone!!!

I don't wanna be a party pooper --- but if *I* was the bride ... I think I'd prefer a Pink ONLY or Pink & DIAMOND necklace rather than a mix of pink & green.

because

a) the mix of colors WITH A WHITE DRESS is gonna be A LOT!
b) pink & green won't be easy to match to clothing for future wear
c) its just a "busy" combo for jewelry - zesty but not classic, yanno?

I concur that it's too big & delicate for a ring - much less a ring with a HALO

.

Eh, just my 2c. GREAT IDEA! VERY ROMANTIC!!!! Congrats!

ETA: if you love the halo look I do think the stone would make a great halo'd "enhancer" on a string of pearls. She could wear the pair on her wedding day (and fancy events afterward) -- and wear the strand of pearls more often, even daily?? Or if a strand of pearls is too "stuffy" -- you could string the enhancer (pink stone in white diamond halo pendant) on a thinner string of freshwater pearls, or a pearl...chain...pearl strand ... or a white gold link chain.

I agree with Deco about the colors. Although green and pink are the wedding colors, it is just too much going on in a piece of jewelry, especially one you would like her to wear for the wedding.

My FAVORITE piece I have seen with a big pear would work really well with yours AND it''s a very classy simple style that could be worn at a wedding. I hope starryeyed doesn''t mind, but here it is:

WOW! Knockout piece! *That''s* FANCY!

The necklace that neatfreak posted was the first thing that came to mind - it would be fabulous. That stone BTW, is FANTASTIC!!

I love that necklace, too! It would look beautiful with your stone!

I like the pink and green combo, it looks very fresh and springy. I''m a bit biased though as I have a peridot ring with pink tourmaline side stones. :)

I really wouldn''t make that stone into a ring though, especially not a haloed stone. I like the DBTY necklace idea only with peridot in place of diamonds. Making the tourmaline dangle removable would be nice too.

Thank you for the suggestions and ideas everyone, I''m listening... keep ''em coming!

Starryeyed''s necklace is very beautiful...

In terms of the comments about the green & pink being busy - one idea I''ve been considering is just a single green accent stone above the pink pear (btw, I think the stone is a little on the purple side and the yellowishness of a peridot next to the tourmaline helps make it look a little pinker, I think). So that would be easy to do with a style similar to starryeyed''s.

One more comment about the difficulty matching the jewelry to her wedding dress, etc. - its a very casual wedding, beach style (not techincally on the beach, but on the water), summer night in new england. Her dress cost like $300 (way to go, honey!
9.gif
), and from what I understand its pretty on the casual side for wedding dresses. I''m going pretty casual too. So just in case that makes a difference in terms of those issues.

Thanks!

I agree about keeping it down to just the pink tourmaline and maybe some pearls or diamonds. Using both the pink and green in wedding jewelry could get too busy/distracting. If you wanted to get her both color stones, maybe use the green in a second piece of jewelry or a hair comb of some kind?

I love the drop necklace above, but also thought maybe something like this with the tourmaline in the center?

May I be very honest? I don''t see that stone being a wedding piece at all. It is large and beautiful, but I think wedding jewelry needs to be more delicate and elegant. You don''t want the necklace to overshadow the wedding gown. Here is what I think is beautiful for a wedding (this belongs to Jennifer):

I could go more for a small pink stone hanging like that blue stone above, but 15 carats is going to be really large.

Fair enough. Its not an absolute requirement that she wear it during the wedding - I think it would be just as fun if it were something that she could wear later that - in part b/c of the colors - would remind her of the day, that''s all. I''d rather make the most beautiful piece of jewelry out of the stone possible, rather than the most appropriate thing for her to wear for the short time period of just the wedding day - does that make sense?

I appreciate these comments, as it helps give me a perspective I just don''t have, i.e., what does a bride want to wear on her day?

If your goal is to make the "most beautiful piece of jewelry out of the stone possible" I *strongly* urge you to eliminate the green from the picture. While green + pink + white is a LOVELY wedding colors combo it''s just not that wearable. The color pink alone or pink+white will be equally reminiscent of your wedding colors while INFINATELY more wearable/ practical/ aesthetically appealing.

Good thinking on the being flexible. I know this seems like a good problem to have, but that stone is just SO HUGE. It's hard to make anything look dainty and wedding like with a stone that big.

If you don't mind if she doesn't wear it on the big day you could go a little blingier and do the green accents if you want.

You could also go the really simple route, and do something like this Tiffany necklace.

I love the first necklace Neatfreak posted. I don''t think wedding jewelry HAS to be dainty. You know her style more than us. What kind of jewelry does she wear? Modern or antique? Does she wear larger stones?

What do you all think of this type of design?

Can anyone photoshop the pink tourmaline pear in my first post onto this?

I also think one small periodot accent where the round bezel diamond is could look nice and perhaps not overpower or overcomplicate it?

I think that''s a *GORGEOUS* design ... yet I''d prefer it for a 3-6 carat stone, at the absolute largest.

Notice that most folks have been giving you ideas to *minimize* the bulk of the stone: Neatfreak''s two versions & even the pearl enhancer one.

This latest idea will give the stone the appearance of a 20 CARAT WHOPPER. I fear that could veer into "costume jewelry-looking" areas & not truly represent the fine piece you''re hoping to create here.

Of course stunning workmanship as appears in your photo example would go a long way towards looking "real" -- it would just be a very, very bold statement. Perhaps even gauche. (gasp)
3.gif
Perhaps I''m much more conservative than your bride to be though.

Can you give us some examples of her preferred style? Designers she likes? Handbag brand she adores? Style icons? Celeb w/ similar looks/style/vibe??

If you want to do the wedding colors (soooo romantic and sweet). I would definately do something like your last post and just keep a hint of the green. I thought starryeyed's necklace was beautiful. Maybe do starreyed's necklace with every 4th diamond or so on the chain being a small periodot instead, vs. every other one. I think if you are giving the piece to her as a bridal gift or whatever it will remind her of your special day regardless. But I do think it is just so sweet that a guy takes interest in the wedding colors. It shows you care a lot about the wedding too.

Don't forget to post pictures when it's completed.

I definitely want to avoid it looking like costume jewelry, as the rock was not cheap and I don't want it to come off that way. So I appreciate the comments.

I think once I have the stone in hand, it'll be a little easier for me to understand how the size will limit my choices. Its a little difficult for me to conceptualize now - I mean, its under 2 centimeters long - seems small to me!
28.gif

What do people typically do with these big honker type rocks, 10 carats or more? What about really huge gems, like 100+ carats? I've seen the Royal Crown Jewels, but not everyone in the world is a king or queen, so...
9.gif

Part of what makes this difficult is that she really doesn't wear jewelry! All she wears, really, is very small diamond studs, and now her engagement ring (see it here). However, I think that's just b/c she just hasn't had good jewelry before, etc. - I don't think she's against jewelry categorically, and she's asked for some stuff, like a nice matching pendant and earrings.

She likes designer shoes and handbags - Jimmy Choo shoes, lots of deisgner bags - Gucci, stuff like that. She likes some of those like $20,000 Gucci bags - crazy!
20.gif

We live in Manhattan, and she's very fashion forward, young, vibrant, stylish, if that helps.

Oh! - she's also a huge celebrity nut, like every woman in Manhattan.

Thanks!

How do you like something like this?

I was thinking it might go nice with something like a short (not dangly), flat white gold chain. Maybe modify the top part a bit and put a touch of green in there with the diamonds?

I''m supposed to get the stone in 2-4 business days... gonna be a long weekend.

I think I'll have to see some pics of how 3-d or flat it is before I can give any real advice on the setting. OK, so I'm biased but I think pink and green would be very pretty as long as it was just accented, or like a diamond by the yard, the stones were extremely small and spread out. I guess a key question is again the style icons thing and what she wears:

1. The more colors you add, the less she can wear it with. IMHO if i was deciding to wear a blue dress, I'd wear a gold necklace w/ a pink stone, but once you add in the green? More of a difficult choice. For the wedding, white will go perfectly well.
2. Also, If she wears gold at all, I think gold in a combination w/ pink and green can make the necklace very summer and pretty
3. Does she wear a lot of dresses/tops with really low necklines/strapless/ sleveless tops? If so you can get away with more colors because alot of the necklace will be against her skin. If not, there is a bigger chance that the necklace may clash with whatever she is wearing. On that note, what is the neckline of her wedding dress?
4. If she doesn't wear gold, then for some reason in my head, with white gold or platinum the necklace will become much more formal. Does she like to dress up? Does she have fancy occasions to wear the necklace to?

Just my opinions looking really forward to seeing this beauty of a stone!

Hi, Periodot!

3. She does wear a lot of dresses, yes, and low neckline shirts, tank tops and the like, yep. However - I DO NOT KNOW WHAT HER DRESS LOOKS LIKE!! If I did, she''d kill me!
9.gif

4. Not a big dresser-upper, really, no. I''ll keep that comment in mind, thanks.

I''m happy to show the actual stone when I get it. Its 1 cm deep, but I agree that it''ll be much easier to figure this out once I can see the thing. Yesterday I got an email saying 2-4 business days, so its gonna be a long weekend!
