I LOVE all the dresses posted showing the different style changes through the ages.....

Widget: My parents got married in 1972, and my mom''s dress and veil were very similar to yours, with the long sleeves, and fluffy poofy veil, except I believe her gown had a lacy turtle neck! My mom actually scanned a pic to e-mail me, but I can''t figure out how to open it. I''ll post when I figure it out.

My dad had a tux with a long coat-tail and pin-stripe grey pants!

So here''s my other idea: Some of you LIW graduates will recognize my fab couture Helen Morely bridesmaid gown from last year....it is the most beautiful thing I''ve ever owned. One thought we''ve had is for that to be a reception dress for me-- red is a traditional bridal color in several east Asian cultures (my mom''s field--she''s a teacher), so maybe it''d be fun to have another celebration to wear it in?? Or am I nuts? If I end up loving my wedding dress (new or old) maybe I won''t want to?

blueroses- Thanks so much for sharing your pictures, I particularly love the ones of your mom, and the bm dresses def. gave me a smile.

But I think you should DEFINITELY wear the red dress. It''s gorgeous!!! I, for one, am changing into the traditional red chinese gown for my reception!

Oooooooh, Can I contribute to this thread? I have a couple of old wedding dresses to show off!
Here are MY Mom and Dad....in 1938!!

(I love her slinky satin gown...)

Very classy, and that is what I call timeless!!! My parents eloped to escape parental opposition in 1941, so I always envied my friends the ubiquitous bridal photos of their mothers!

That reminds me.. most of you have prolly seen my grandmas dress.. but I'll post it again (1939, I believe). I absolutely LOVE IT.. and it is still at my house, but not in wearable condition..

I had seen this and commented on it in the past, but since you have reposted it, let me say again what a fabulous gown your grandmother had. (She also looked fabulous in the gown!) A gown like this could be worn today to equal effect. It is timeless and elegant.

Oh I really like your dress. I am not a strapless kind of girl I alway look like I am trying to smuggle in something in my top. Not cute. I am hoping and praying that dress with sleeves will be back in style by the time I get married. Or perhaps I will just wear a suit...I LOVE YOUR TRAIN....so long an fluid and yummy!

My parents got married on my moms 21st birthday in 1976. She wore a juliet cap and swiss dots...I have heard about how she loves those damn swiss dots since before I can remember!!! I tried her dress on when I got engaged, I looked like I belonged in a haunted house playing a dead bride...the dress was HORRIBLE, high kneck, long sleeves...YUCK.. I did love her veil but can''t wear it b/c I am wearing ivory and the veil is white!!! My Dad wore cream and brown ruffles! and the bridesmaids wore those floppy hats... I guess our daugthers will feel the same way about our strapless gowns and cathedral veils!

What beautiful brides!! I truly believe that a happy woman will look incredible on her wedding day no matter the style of gown! Sure, my strapless will date me, but such is life and the tides of fashion.

My MIL showed me her wedding pictures the week before our wedding, and her BM dresses..... I''m not sure how to describe them.... purple (which was actually a great color), tulle pouffy sleeves with a ruffle at the wrist, a ruffled clown-style neck, completely formless dresses with a ruffle at mid-calf. Her gown was lovely though, high lace collar, long lace sleeves, might have had a ruffle, but it was nice, and the ruffle at the bottom of the gown, like Bagpuss''s wedding dress. Don''t remember whether or not she had a train...

My parents got married in 1977 or so. My mother wore a beautiful lace dress (will have to find some pics) while my father wore...... baby blue with ruffles!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!! He claims he picked out a nice dark grey suit, but when Mom''s mom went to order the tuxes, she decided baby blue would look better since the BMs were in baby blue too! Oh dear.....

Ahhh, I love this thread!!! I absolutely love seeing all these brides from different eras. One thing holds true for all the pics, regardless of the time: everyone looks young, beautiful, and supremely happy!

What a wonderful thread!

Widget, your mother''s dress is just stunning--so sleek & elegant & perfect for the 30''s (or today!) And you look just beautiful in your wedding photos! (I agree w/ the Sandra Dee + Doris Day comment!) You''re just a doll!

blueroses, that red dress is just amazing! I think you should wear it for your reception if you want. It''s altogether possible (or probable!) that you''ll find a wedding dress that you adore & you just won''t want to take it off. Either way, do what makes you happy! It''s your day! (though you''ll likely have more opportunities to wear the red dress again than your wedding gown...)

JessesGrl, have you thought about dyeing your mom''s veil to match your dress? Just a thought...

JCJD...powder blue--lol! Was your dad upset when your mom came home w/ a blue tux for him to wear to the wedding?

Maybe you are my daughter! I mean, that was the year I was married and I did want to throw that blanket over you.... ;-)

Fun thread! Everyone''s gowns are beautiful!

My parents, from 1971:

And my sister, from 1995:

Sorry for the huge photos! I''m trying to get the hang of sizing them right.

Looks like long sleeves and high necks were popular in the 70s, along with poofy veils!

JLC- your mother looked sooo beautiful! Although in that pic she looked a little terrified. :) Your sisters dress looks a lot like my sisters dress. :)

Wow rebecca romain''s dress is REALLY beautlful. I don''t think i''d ever seen it before. She looked amazing.. I guess supermodels tend to look fantastic on thier wedding day though..

MelSue - Thanks! Yeah, that''s not the best picture of her, and the quality is not great. But it shows the dress and also the funny 70s wedding cake and daisy flower motif. I laughed at the daisy hats from blueroses photos because it reminded me of my parents flowers. Her bridesmaids didn''t wear hats, but their dresses were just as awful!

And I was thinking the same thing about our sisters'' dresses. It''s so funny how dresses from the same era look so similar. I guess the strapless trend will be the same way - a sign of the times.

Oh wait!! Maybe they DID wear daisy hats! I just found this:

Heh heh heh... You''re a hoot Deb! I''ve got enough mothers already - Mom, Stepmom, Mom-in-law, Stepmom-in-law - so you see, there just isn''t room for you on the list! You can never have too many aunts though...

Do I remember you posting your wedding picture once-upon-a-time? I''m sure we''d all love to see it! And if you''ve still got it, maybe you can convince your daughter to wear it for hers, saving you the pain of seeing your daughter in a strapless wedding gown! *Poke poke, tease tease*.

jellybean -

here''s a picture i found of rebecca romain & john stamos. it''s from this great site that has tons of celebrity wedding photos:

Hey! Thanks for the photo! I bought the InStyle Weddings magazine way back when that had this exact photo in it to show my seamstress. I didn''t look quite as nice as she did. My dress was slightly different - I didn''t have lace all the way down to the floor b/c at $100 a square foot, that chantilly lace would have put this waaaay out of my budget. So I just had it on the top.

I did the same lace veil too although in the pics it looked so flat on my head.

Here is a short of the wedding party from my parents wedding in 1979. I dont think they look all that out of date.
