There is a ring that I've been eyeing for several months. It's way out of my price range.

I wanted to ask the opinion of PS'ers.

Here are the specs:

The center stone is a 1 carat brown quartz. It's about 5-7mm and with a round cut.

The 100 diamonds that make up the double halo are about 0.90 carats in total carats. The color of the diamonds average to G-H and the clarity of them is about Si2.

It's 14kt gold -- almost 6 grams.

The price is around $2,000. Would you pay that much for a brown quartz? If the center stone was anything but a quartz, I don't think I'd question it that much. I guess I can see the cost of 100 small diamonds and the gold being the reason for the price tag.

The gold is rose gold. I can't think of another stone that could be substituted. Maybe a chocolate diamond? Or a morganite?

It's a beautiful ring!

No, I wouldn't pay that much. Sounds like you're really interested in the setting. I'd try to have it re-created for a stone that's more appropriate to the cost of the setting.

I would not buy brown quartz as they do not appeal to me. In any case, a 5 mm to 7 mm brown quarzt is really inexpensive. Very inexpensive so the asking price is really for the setting alone. Even then, considering the quality of the diamonds are SI2 and the fact that the metal is only 14K gold, I think $2K is rather expensive. Perhaps it is the labour of setting the 100 diamonds that makes up the bulk of the price. How is the quality of the workmanship? I hope you don't mind posting a picture of the ring here.

Here's a picture of the ring. I cut out the vendor name. (Hope I don't get in trouble for that). You can probably guess the vendor since I've mentioned them several times already.

I can live with the SI2 diamonds. I'm thinking of an Amethyst for the middle stone, but I know that's a quartz too. :)

Hmm.. maybe a 1 carat "chocolate" diamond?

That is a blingtastic ring with good sized diamonds! It could stand to have the quartz swapped out for a champagne coloured FCD. :naughty: An amethyst will not do it any justice. Is pricing negotiable?

Is that an LOGR ring? I've seen rings like that very similar to this one. He's a Chinese mounting vendor on ebay. I think the $2K is 99.9999% the price of the setting as a brown quartz is worth very very little. Honestly, if you like the mount, you can have him make it without the stone, so that the prongs are as durable as can be. They are not as durable after being set. I have had to rebuild prongs on several rings I reused for different stones.

TL -- It's not that vendor. It's Laurie Sarah's design.

Chrono -- I found a garnet ring with the same design on her website. I guess I'll wait and find a stone. I know LS would probably use a stone that I buy and send to them.

I am surprised he didn't try to call it "smoky topaz" with that price tag :Up_to_something:

Very unusual to see Smoky Quartz in such a setting. It would seem like a designer would opt for one of the 'big 3' for that elaborate piece.
Good point about the prongs not being so strong the second time around as they my break off if over worked, especially if they were cast. Best regards, Lee
