I recently brought my 3.02ct F VS2 GIA triple Excellent solitaire diamond ring to my local jeweller in Singapore (when I went back for a short holiday) to have them clean it and tighten the prongs for me. I louped it beforehand and afterwards and didn't see any problem with it.

However, when I took it to the local Singapore gemologist/ appraiser, he told me that there's now a "bruise" on the edge of the table, albeit extremely tiny. He told me that it's impossible to see it with a loupe and he had to turn up his 'scope to a high magnification to see it properly. Now, this man has looked at this diamond numerous times, at least once every three-four months since I bought it in 2006, so you might say that he knows this diamond intimately. I do believe that there's a bruise on the diamond now, which was not there before. There's also no mark (ie. no feather, nothing else) on the table of the diamond as per the GIA report.

I am pretty sure that the jeweller caused it by careless handling but cannot prove that they did it, since I didn't take the ring to the appraiser immediately before I haded it over to the jeweller. Even if I had, I don't see how I could prove that they caused the bruise.

Anyway, my questions now are:

1) how bad is this bruise? ie. Would it affect the triple Ex rating of the diamond and could it lower the value of my diamond?

2) could this bruise be polished out and if so, would that bring the weight of the stone to less than 3ct?

Appreciate your input and advice.

Phoenix, did he show you the bruise with a microscope?
I''m sorry to hear this.

1. diamonds do not ''bruise''

they chip.

If he needs to wind the scope up way past 10x to see a chip on the table then it does not matter.
10x by loupe = mind clean by definition

2. not much a bench worker does goes any where near the table.

I am more interested in the behaviour and motivation of the appraiser gemologist than the ''bruiseed diamond''

Thanks, QueenMum. He didn''t show it to me, but I believe him.

Thank you very much, Garry. I was hoping you'd see this and respond; so am so glad to hear that you don't think that this is really a problem.

I did ask the appraiser what he meant by a "bruise" and he said an extremely teeny tiny scratch.

The appraiser is totally independent. He does not sell any diamonds or gemstones, nor does he ever recommend any dealer/seller of diamonds. He's THE authority in Singapore, very well-respected and he does not know the jeweller who tightened the prongs.

So if this is a mind-clean issue for *me*, could I possibly have it polished off wihout losing any weight in the diamond (and also still retain the triple Ex rating)? Thanks again.

Phoenix,
I''m not an expert, but for a VS2 clarity grade, I don''t think it will change anything.

I also suspect this polishing line to be there before your jeweler cleaned your ring.
I can not imagine how he could scratch a diamond by cleaning it.
Even if you put your diamond earrings together with your diamond ring in a same box, they will unlikely scratch each other.
But again, I''m not an expert.

As an expert in a small pond who gets a buzz out of recognition for professional brainisms, I ask you to think about why someone would tell you they can see a mark on your diamond that is soooo small that it can not be seen with a loupe.

Why not have the VS2 removed at the same time?

I guess it's always possible that this so-called 'bruise" had been there before.

Re the part highlighted, I always thought that one should NOT do that, in case they do scratch each other (?).

LOL.

Garry, I am so happy you've given me the reassurance that my diamond is ok after all. Thank you very much.
