Well, I went today and saw my diamond under the gemscope. Even though it is beautiful I think we are going to upgrade. We also noticed that the diamond has two "natural" chips. I can''t remember the correct terminology, but I just remember that they said they are like chips and that they are naturally in the stone--not something I did. Mine also had a ton of little white specks all over it, can''t see that without the gemscope though.

I saw an SI1, G, Excellent cut, .71 carat diamond today BR under the gemscope. It was gorgeous!! No white flecks. Could see 1 tiny inclusion, but it was about 1/4 the size of the inclusion in my diamond.

No decisions yet. Still in the thinking process....

the cut is FAR more important than the clarity if the clarity is reasonably clean and it sounds like yours is... be very careful not to ''upgrade'' your clarity just to downgrade the quality of the cut. Saying "excellent" or even "ideal" is not the whole story... I''d rather have a mostly eye clean I1 with a tight ideal cut than a totally clean SI1 with an average cut. If the I1 had carbons I''d pass, but if they were not affecting the light performance I''d be fine.

I miss typed. We looked at a VS1 yesterday not an SI1. I must have said SI1 because that is what I kept talking about upgrading to. The cut on the VS1 is better than the cut on my I1. My I1 is very good. The VS1 was EXCELLENT. I won''t sacrifice the cut for clarity. I''ve learned that on this forum.

What are carbons? My diamond has little white specks all over it. I compared it to a snow globe. The VS1 had no white specks. I would think that would be better than what I have plus the cut was better. The color was up to a G where as mine is an I.

Are the little white specks I saw all over carbons?

Carbons refer to black specks, at least that''s the context I usually see it used in around here. Black carbon inclusions are usually the most noticeable and visible of inclusions, I think. Perhaps all those white specks are the reflection of the feather off the facets?

Or the white specks could be some type of cloud. The GIA report has those orange blobs on it. See if it calls them a cloud anywhere on the report.

Also those indents or chips are probably called naturals. They are the skin of the diamond that isn''t cut or polished off in the cutting

As long as your ring is structurally sound then it looks like a good stone. But IF it is no longer mind clean for you then upgrade the clarity but try to keep to a good cut. Probably the good cut kept the feather and the clouds from being a problem in your stone.

Good Luck!! with your search.

Thank you for all the information everyone. We have definitely decided to change the diamond out sometime soon. Like you said-- I think that it is hard to get past knowing about the problems with this diamond. We will fix that and we will both be happy. Like my fiance says--we''ve waited 8 1/2 years for this--we should have a much better quality diamond....personally I''m glad he said that.

I can''t wait to go looking though. I''d love to go now. I''m also excited to go looking for the wedding band. I went to a jewelry store yesterday and tried one on that was gorgeous. Can''t wait to show my guy.
