I’m pretty sure this long-time inactive PSer must’ve been hacked (it doesn’t make sense that it would be the real user, or at least I truly hope not!!!). I contacted them to purchase the BGD studs listed yesterday, sent money (yes, my own fault), then noticed several inconsistencies and then was ghosted.
@Lolmoka formerly stone-cold11
They have now also changed the PS handle so wanted to let everyone know in case they come back to try again under the same name or hack anyone else’s inactive PS account to do the same.

OMG!!!! I’m so sorry! Was it F&F?

@marymm did you notice anything weird when you corresponded with her?

I'm sorry this happened. Thank you for alerting everyone.

This is terrible! Sorry this happened to you @ac117. Hope you get your money back. Now I try not pay with PP F&F and willing to pay the fee for some buyer’s protection whether from package loss or fraud. It’s a scary world out there.

stinks. also pay with credit card when you can. offers some protection too.

Thanks both! It was my mistake since I saw they were a long time PSer and had more trust so I won’t be getting it back (Zelle). But as long as I’ve helped to prevent it from happening again, I’ll move on.

Definitely a mistake even veterans can make! That's one thing I look for also when determining whether to reach out to purchase something or not, to see if they're a long time PSer. :(2

I’m guessing you already reported it to @Ella but just in case I’m tagging her in the thread

if it's Zelle it means it's attached to a real person with a bank account... they need to be reported for fraud

@ac117 I am so sorry that this happened to you! Hopefully Zelle can help you track down this person. Thanks for the heads up - terrible thing to have happened!!

@marymm did you notice anything weird when you corresponded with her?

You know, I looked up Stone-cold11's post history and noticed it had been 11 years or so since their last post ... but people do come and go ... so I did reach out via the OMC Bangle LT listing ... they emailed me back a very brief/terse message ... I thought, well, maybe they're emailing via their phone ... I replied saying I would want delivery to my PO box and so wanted confirmation they'd be shipping via USPS ... and they emailed back even briefer/terser and not answering my shipping question and saying if I didn't reply I was ready to purchase they'd move on to next buyer. So I was annoyed and decided I didn't need the diamond and said I was withdrawing my interest and to please move on to the next buyer. After I hit "send" on that reply, I realized in the interim they had sent another email answering my shipping question ... but at that point I also noticed @CHRISTY-DANIELLE post that she had sold it and had actually reached out previously to buy it back, so I was happy to have bowed out thinking she may get her diamond back.

In retrospect, I did notice some weirdness but ascribed it to the passage of time -- but their emails seemed inappropriately cursory as compared to all of my other contacts with PS sellers -- then I noticed the name change but thought, well, maybe with the over-10-year gap they now want an identity that represents them now.

I am so very sorry you lost money @ac117 -- like you, I do confer a trust in longtime PS members -- thank you for sharing your experience and putting out this PSA to warn others.

Thanks for sharing and I’m glad you were spared! The correspondence was definitely terse but they sent one message that said they were driving so I chalked it up to that/being busy.

Hi everyone, we’ve changed the username back to help avoid confusion if anyone else was scammed using someone else’s longtime account, which we’ve also secured. We apologize for adding to the confusion, we get username change requests all day and did not realize there was anything amiss until noticing the posts in Preloved and putting all the pieces together.

It does seem that this person was likely targeted and scammed. We have our developers looking into it to see if there’s anything more widespread, but right now it seems to be probably two brute force attacks on single accounts.

I suggest anyone using LoupeTroop in particular, since that seems to be where the scamming is happening, to familiarize yourself with current online scams. Using vague or terse language, not answering questions you’ve asked, forcing you to use friends and family, cash app, or Zelle are all common indicators of scams. Ask them for more pictures of the item, with today’s date, written, or of a particular angle. Anything to ensure that you’re actually working with someone who owns the item.

Although the cost savings may be tempting, I always recommend PayPal goods and services or similar protected services. Cash app and Zelle in particular seem to be favorites of scammers.

We also suggest that you all check your usernames, emails, and passwords here: https://haveibeenpwned.com/

If they appear in these breaches, change the passwords to either passphrases or longer very secure passwords.

Oh. Wow. @ac117 I’m so sorry this happened to you!!

Stone cold wasn’t a man of many words so to be honest a short reply would have felt true to life! But he was never pushy or rude, saying if you weren’t ready to pay now he was going to move on wouldn’t be his style. I haven’t seen that username mentioned here in… Well, over a decade sounds about right.

I thought I saw that some LT accounts had been hacked too… I hope whatever is going on doesn’t become more widespread! @ac117 Thank you for the warning, I’m so sorry it comes at your literal expense :x2;(

I thought some of the wording sounded familiar. The listings were copied almost verbatim from these threads.

Thanks Yssie! The messages to me weren’t rude, they were just to the point and they weren’t pushy about sending the payment immediately, they said they were driving and would send the info shortly and would tell other buyers it was sold once they received payment. So my alarm bells didn’t go off right away at all. Oh well.

Ugh isn’t that something. Because the listings had such detailed pictures and accurate descriptions I was so thrown off and this explains why.

I was surprised by how reasonable and PS-ey the listings were too ;(

I was surprised by how reasonable and PS-ey the listings were too ;(

The reason for it is that those scammers copied directly from the existing listings created by the actual PSers. They took descriptions and photos… just changed the price.
There are some examples in the other thread called SOLD by DejaWiz.

This is terrible, I am so sorry.

This is heartbreaking! I am so sorry!

I'm so sorry this happened. It's very upsetting that someone did this on LT. Thank you for warning us immediately and reporting it on PS.

i will still be buying, albeit more cautiously.

I thought about this too, but I think taking a couple of extra pics, maybe in a different style or post-it note showing the date sent upon request? It's not fool-proof, but it's a start.

It was someone else who also got scammed here with a VCA bracelet. If I remember correctly, in that case the scammer created a real account, posted enough to gain trust, then went on LT and sent fake item.

Ugh…I’m so sorry that This happened to you, @ac117!
