House cleaning is a great plan - especially for a compulsive cleaner! I did that to make extra money when I was in college too.

I called the UEO today and the woman I spoke to told me that since he cut my hours in half and refuses to completely lay me off (I asked him today if I could file and he said if I don''t work the half time and leave, he''s going to say I quit!!) but I may be entitled to UE to make up the difference while I look for another job. She said she wasn''t positive though, so I have to call back Monday (when I effectively lose hours, I am working Sunday) and file, see what they say. I hate it being so up in the air but... grr.

I now have Fridays and Saturdays off all day for the remainder of the time I spent here so I''m going to look for under the table work like house cleaning to help. I dislike my boss greatly, he''s a shady individual with no regard for ANY of his employees. I feel like an idiot for staying here so long and being taken advantage of.

Okay, so your situation sound EXACTLY like mine. I use to work 40 hours a week, all sorts of weird shifts too because I was the manager and I had two students working under me and I would let them make their own schedule around school and I would work the shifts they couldn''t. But apparently I made too much and my new bosses (the company changed from a previous boss who was great), decided to cut my hours down to 15-20 hours a week but during a time of the day that would make it harder for me to work another job. I was literally forced to quit (which was their true intention) and the Unemployment office agreed. Good luck, I really hope it works out for you. I hate when employers screw people over!! grrrr

Can I win against him through unemployment if I decide to go for that? What did it entail? I''m really scared because he''s my only great professional reference, but he''s totally f..ing me over. I go to class from 9am to 12pm and he wants me to work 3pm to 6pm Monday thru Thursday AND Sunday 11am to 6pm.

How the hell am I supposed to find a job to fit those stupid hours and still be able to get MY stuff done? I feel totally betrayed. I''ve been asking all my really good customers if they can locate something in their field for me and a few have taken my resume with them (Thank GOD someone''s on my side) so hopefully something comes from that.

I''m beginning to think I may have to go up against my boss.

Well, first thing is first (and keep in mind this is for my state, which is Maryland), apply for unemployment benefits. If you are afraid to quit now, apply for supplement of your original pay. Do whatever they ask (it can involve a phone call by a certain time, some paper work etc).

Next, if your boss contests, you will likely be involved in a hearing of some sort with a lawyer as a mediator. They will listen to your version of events and then listen to your boss' version of events (and btw my boss claimed customers were complaining about me, they freaking LOVED me ugh, so be prepared for lies).

They will then make a ruling, which if its not in your favor, I believe you can appeal but it most likey will be in your favor.

Employers are suppose to have some type of unemployment insurance. This is insurance which exists to cover such things. If your boss did not pay into it, that's his problem, not yours. A lot of employers hate when employees ask for benefits because it ups their premium (like making a claim when you lost jewelry *gasp*) so they will fight it. But never forget it is your right to ask (and after 3 years, I believe you've earned a lot, they do calculated by your employment history if I remember correctly. That's how they figure out how much to pay you).

Again, please do research in your state because I am not sure how it varies. Get pamphlets and everything else you can, there may even be a website explaining your rights. Don't always rely on the person on the phone, unless it's a higher level person.

ETA: The reason I say to apply first, is because while you are waiting for your boss to contest, or waiting for a hearing date you can be collecting benefits. If the rule in his favor, then you will owe the money you received. However, the way it is set up is so you don't suffer while waiting for a final decision. So start now.

Nebe I totally feel for you. I was "laid off" of my job a few months ago, and it totally caught me by surprise. I worked at a restaurant for six years, and most of the time I was a manager. I helped them open 3 restaurants...worked my butt of for them. Then I decided that I wanted to go back to school so I demoted myself to a waitress again and all of a sudden I''m laid off.

If it taught me anything at all...it is that I will NEVER go above and beyond for an employer that has such disregard for his employees. I watched him do some seriousy shady and awful things (like close down restaurants in the middle of the night and not tell the employees so then they just show up to work and see that the business is closed down) and for some reason I thought I was "different" because I had been there for so long and he "liked" me. WHAT A JOKE!!!

It was also hard for me because it was the only job I had since I was 18 years old and I really didn''t have any other skills. It was really uncomfortable for me to try and explain to possible employers how I became unemployed. But I did end up getting another job (that paid more) through looking at the job postings at my school. I noticed that employers that specifically look to hire students aren''t too worried about skills. Luckily, I ended up finding a job that I can use to my advantage as an internship AND pays well.

Good luck!

Nebe, sorry to hear you lost your job. I went through that a few months ago as well. Definitely collect unemployment, it''s not a ton of income but it''s something. I don''t know about your state, but here in IL you can do your claim online, it''s super easy, and you can start your claim tomorrow. Good luck to you!!!

Hello - so sorry to hear about your situation. In case you are still interested in working for a LFS, you can search for a local fish store using the FINS network.

I am definitely NOT looking to stay in any LFS. I''m done with this stuff.

Onto the medical industry!! You''ll never lose a job there

Fair enough! Best of luck to you in your search, I hope you find something soon (as do you).

Thank you for the advice though!!

Oh, and your cute little kitty looks like a raccoon!!

Have you tried looking for a job through a medical staffing service? Perhaps you may find an entry level- temp job in the medical industry, which will give you some experience.
