Newsflash!

Mr Delster has started to design my ring in CAD!

Did I have you going? Did you think I was calling him a bad name?
2.gif
Oh no, so much the opposite! I''m beyond excited! I can''t wait to see what he comes up with...

Oh, and in other news...

Poor Mr Delster is so eager to get engaged that he has decided he is not waiting until I finish my doctorate. Poor man knows it''ll take me months and months yet to finish (I badly need a thesis mojo injection but that''s a whole other topic) and he''s done waiting. Ooops. I think?!?

And he would like a bling book like the one Equestrienne made for her man! But first he wants to do the CAD thing by himself. Fine by me!

Life is good

Apart from the lack of thesis-mojo...

Yayyyyy!!! And I didn''t see the insult? What did I miss?! I just saw CAD and thought RING DESIGN!!!
10.gif

Thanks sunnyd! The joke was that I was calling him a cad when he so clearly isn''t - don''t mind me, I''ve been listening to Jane Austen audiobooks and it made me giggle!

I thought of the insult first, mostly because I don''t know how CAD = ring design (what it stands for I mean). Plus I''m in England, and ''cad'' is such an English insult.

Re: your news: YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!! That''s very exciting!!!!! I take it you''re ok with being engaged earlier as opposed to later?

Hahaha how exciting

Super fabulous and exciting!!

I definetly thought of ring design since I don''t think the term CAD is used in the USA. At least I''ve never heard it...but Congratulations! I''m sure you are super excited!!!! Hope you don''t have to wait too long!

I thought of the insult first because I watch too many English movies and read too many English books...Heh. Plus, I''ve always wanted to call someone that!

How exciting!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Del, I am sooooooooooo happy for you!!! Are you doing the eternity thing, or a solitaire? I did a bling book too, its so fun!

hehe D''s an architect as you know so that''s the first thing that I thought of! That''s great news! Woohoo!!! So what''s top on your bling list? Any rings you adore?

What's a cad, for those on the west?

Oh yeah, Gwendolyn, the CAD is what's made on the computer for custom stuff. Generally a hideously blocky looking thing that looks industrial = ring design! Hehehe!
9.gif

How exciting, Delster!! Keep us posted!

A "cad" is ill-bred and usually dishonest.

CAD - Computer Aided Drawing (I think). The CAD''s I have seen are basically a 3-D computer generated images of what the ring will look like. I think the next step after CAD is a wax sample of the setting...but that probably depends on where you buy from.

DELSTER - That is utterly fantastic news on all fronts!!! I am so THRILLED for you!!

Thanks everyone! I am seriously chuffed. I feel so lucky to have Mr Delster
36.gif
Oh and he has eight years'' experience working with CAD so I''m super excited to see what he creates!

Sunnyd, a cad = Mr Wickham, or in his modern reincarnation, Daniel Cleaver. Not a cad = Mr Darcy, or in his modern version, Mark D''Arcy. In either of the latter cases, Colin Firth

Gwendolyn there are loads of CAD images up here on PS... just stick CAD in the search engine. They usually do look very blocky and industrial, with the prongs sticking straight up in the air and so on.

Miscka, we are able to swing the solitaire! Yippee!!!

I love that. Cracked me up. He is so yummy.

Soooo, what is the timeline now? Will he let you see it beforehand? Will you post it? Are you working with a local jeweler? Can I think of more questions??

Yep, Colin Firth is very yummy! We have a little Colin Firth appreciation society going on among my girlfriends

I have no idea - all in his hands! But I''m guessing at least three months, probably more like nine.

Will he let you see it beforehand?

The diamond and the design, yes. The finished product, probably not.

Will you post it?

Of course!!!

Are you working with a local jeweler?

No idea - Mr Delster''s territory! He''ll definitely use a Pricescope vendor for the diamond but I can''t say for the setting.

Can I think of more questions??

I''m sure you can!

How very exciting!

I''ve just seen the CADs from Whiteflash for my ring and I can''t wait for the next step!

Congrats!! yay!

Also, for like the first ten or so posts, all I thought CAD stood for was Coronary Artery Disease and I just kept thinking... she is probably way too young to have CAD... it must stand for something else....

So glad to know what CAD really means!!

nerd alert here
i immediately thought of the ring and i am from the us
why you ask? i had to actually take a class in how to do cad drawings for my graphic design degree.
i wonder if i could make my own ring cad lol. like i said...nerd alert

Ooooooooooh yay! How exciting. Can''t wait to see pics!!

Psshhh nine months! That man will not wait that long! Don''t you guys have a big vacation coming up? I am just so excited for you, and I think it is just too cute that he wants to do this.

Nine months is my guess based on how our budget it working out and on how long I think it''ll take us to make a final decision as to the setting. It''s just so hard to decide what I want because I haven''t been able to see many different styles in real life. In Ireland you basically have three options - RB solitaire, princess solitaire, or RB or princess three stone. And so, along with just one EC solitaire, that''s all I''ve been able to try on so far...
8.gif
I asked one very upmarket store to show me a cushion and they said they "thought" they had one, but they "couldn''t find it"???

The holiday, sadly, isn''t until after the thesis is done. And the less we say about that the better. Still searching for the thesis-mojo... I bet it''s Stateside, rolling around lasciviously in the display cases at Good Old Gold! Ha! If anyone sees it, deport it to Ireland pronto! Please! Show no mercy!!!

I think the closest American equivalent to "cad" is "player" (or to urban folk, "play-a"). When I first got out of college, I worked for a British company's US branch. My boss was a Londoner - he described his college-student son who had lots of casual girlfriends as "a cad." Whenever I hear the word "cad," and it's not often, I think of Mister Darcy.

I knew exactly what CAD in this instance meant. My ex-husband is a design engineer and I used to be a graphic artist for a manufacturing company in my 20s. I know CAD like the back of my hand....along with SolidWorks. And my company has designers here that use it. We have a 4 foot wide HP plotter in our Engineering "pit," and I'd love to see your ring plotted out on ANSI-D (24 x 36)!

Oh no, no, no, most definitely not!!! Darcy is not the cad in that story, Wickham is. Nasty Wickham. Niiiice Darcy.

Here''s the definition of a cad from dictionary.com:

1. an ill-bred man, esp. one who behaves in a dishonorable or irresponsible way toward women.
2. British Archaic.
a. a local town boy or youth, as contrasted with a university or public school student.
b. a servant at a university or public school.
[Origin: 1780–90; short for caddie (def. 2)]
—Synonyms 1. bounder, rotter, rascal, rogue; heel.

I think it does mean something similar to a ''player''? We don''t use that term over here.

Bridget - I think if Mr Delster plotted out a ring that size I''d be scared of it!

(thunking self on side of head) WICKHAM! Right! I got a little confused.

It seems synonymous with "player." When it comes to stuff like this, I always consult The Urban Dictionary (see: http://www.urbandictionary.com). That basically catalogs all of the popular slang words. A friend of mine directed me to that. She is a little older than I am and didn't understand why people would crack up at her when she'd say, "Oh, I'm just going to hook up with some of the guys after work." She meant "meet the guys for a beer." What "hook up" means in popular culture - at least here in the US - is "get together for sex." Anyway, this is what The Urban Dictionary defines "player" as:

Player

A male who is skilled at manipulating ("playing") others, and especially at seducing women by pretending to care about them, when in reality they are only interested in sex. Possibly derived from the phrases "play him for a fool", or "play him like a violin". The term was popularized by hip-hop culture. A certain class of low-rent people have decided that backstabbing and misogyny are acceptable, so the word is sometimes used as a compliment or term of endearment between male friends, as in the greeting "What up, player?".

Usage: Gina thought she had found the love of her life when she met Sean, but after she found out he had also slept with three of her best friends, she realized that he was nothing but a player.

Yep. Pretty much the same thing.

You know, back when I was in middle school "hook up" was a prolong makeout session. When people started using it for sex, I was totally confused. I''m so not hip.

Thank Goodness!

That is so exciting! How cool that he has the ability to do that! Keep us posted

Please post the pics when you get them! I am very excited for you!!!

Update! Apparently drawing the "ring" was easy but the "rest of it" is proving problematic. So what we have so far is... a CIRCLE! Yippee!!!
3.gif
Heh heh...

Actually, being serious, the boy has gone off and found a diamond he likes the size of, and has literally reproduced it to the millimetre in CAD. He has the band done and is now trying to work out how to wrap the prongs around the diamond, and integrate the head into the band. I am majorly impressed!
