Hi Guys

So I’m doing a lot of research well in advance as my husband has decided that rather than reset my princess cut 1.2ct diamond we will probably sell/consign it/keep it and make it a pendant (hopefully budget allows) and upgrade to a 1.8-1.9ct RB.

I've been looking long and hard and really keep coming back to the below two pictures. I love the 6 prong look and I want it in either
1) The knife edge and a 1/2 or 3/4 eternity band
2) Or center stone set in thin pave with matching wedding band.

I've got a size 5 finger and want to maximize the diamond presence. I live in Australia (Brisbane) but will be doing this through either JA or WF. It seems every jeweler I go to here says platinum needs to be sent away for polishing no one can do it in house. This worries me as I'm not going through them to get the ring made, Meaning why would they care how it's treated and do something dodgy like swap the stone out. I mean this is very unlikely but easier when you go back to the place you've had it made but I can't send it every year for that it's not feasible.

Here are my questions

1) For those of you with platinum or white gold solitaire e-rings, do u find the portion above your hand that's visible scratches up quite quickly and easily enough that it's worth looking into doing the second option which is the pave e-ring to reduce that scratched band look?

2) is white gold less or more prone than platinum to scratching? If it's the same I could just get it done in 18kt white gold and have it easily have it plated here at any jeweler while I'm in store every 6 months if I wanted to.

3) which look do you prefer at why?

Re: Calling all solitaire or pave e-ring owners. advice need

I prefer the solitaire with a diamond wedding band. I just think it makes the diamond show up better than when there are two rows of diamonds on both rings. I have the Vatche knife edge ring and mine is not visibly scratched at all. But I do take care of my rings and do not wear them when I am cooking or cleaning, etc.

I think with the diamond shank, it is just going to need cleaning more often and dirty stones will look dull. I really see no advantage to that unless you just like the look of having both rings with pave on them.

If you can afford platinum then definitely go with that. It just looks so much brighter and more luminous than white gold. Everytime I've chosen gold over platinum I've ended up regretting it. The polishing of platinum is not an issue. Check around more and find a good bench jeweler. who you can trust not to switch the damn stone! It's a easy job, absolutely no reason to ship back to the US for that.

Pave on the shank is a matter of pure personal preference. Both styles look great.

I prefer the solitaire - definitely lets your center stone shine. Also it doesn't get lost in the sea of diamonds on the band..

Really depends on if you want a pave wedding band. With a pave e-ring it just looks like the diamond isn't centered properly as in the second pic. The solitaire setting on the e-ring in conjunction with the pave band adds nice contrast. Also I wouldn't bother polishing hte platinum as I like the contrast with the "aged" look.

Platinum!!! I love the weight and feel.

I really like the look of the solitaire and diamond band. And on the plus side you could even wear the wedding band as a stand alone if you ever wanted too.

I've had the plain shank six prong and the scratched up platinum bothered me. Changed to a pave shank which I love way more, also because I like to see more bling. Because I am matchy-matchy I would choose the matching pav band too. I also want my center stone to be the star. With my set it is, mostly because of how thin the shank on my ering is.

Re: Calling all solitaire or pave e-ring owners. advice need

Like LLJsMom, I also prefer pave over a band that has patina or scratches. I prefer the twinkle or sparkle over the metal I guess. Personally, I love the six prong with pave that you showed in the third picture.

In my case, I replaced my original e-ring with a completely new reset. And instead of matching to the pave in my wedding band, I got a different look with a twisty pave band (James Allen twisted pave halo ring) but very similar sized stones as in my wedding band. I found it too difficult to make an exact match to my wedding band. Sometimes I do wonder how I would like a plain band against the e-ring, but I have a sentimental husband who would be sad about me changing the actual wedding band. ;))

Have fun with your decision!!

I personally like the 6 Prong pave, it's secure, looks gorgeous, and is thing enough that it won't take away from the center diamond, while still adding an elegant look to it and adding a little extra sparkle from different angles to draw you towards the center stone, not away from it.

Wow thanks everyone! It's given me a fair bit to think about. Still trying to figure it out, thank god I've got time! :D

Agree with the solitaire letting your center stone be the main attraction and my vote is for platinum. Good luck with your decision.

Solitaire with the diamond wedding band...draws attention to your stone. Too much pave takes attention away from your
stone (IMO). They are both beautiful looks though.

I have platinum and I dont even notice the scratches. I've only had mine polished about twice in 15 years. I guess the patina
look doesnt bother me.
