Hi i have always been so interested with these types of stones, and was wondering if anybody knows if this in fact real, i have been told yes but they are far from experts on this types of things, i have done different types of tests that i have found on google to do and its all leading towards yes, if so are these accually worth anything, i dont know as i had this given to me :-) i have added a few different pics to show you, so any opinion would be great, Thank you in advance

I know I am usually the one to speak up about not doing gem ID based on photo. I reserve the right to be inconsistent with myself on occasion.

That doesn't look like an opal at all. Based on your photos, I would hazard a guess of amethyst in matrix.

It looks like Charoite.

I agree, not an opal, but more likely amethyst or chaorite

Doesn't look like it is an opal in the first place.

Sorry, I'm with the charoite group :((

Hmmm that doesn't look like an Opal...

& it doesn't look like a Charoite either.

That big white/milky band...

Try google for Chevron Amethyst images :naughty:

Eh? I have a number of Charoite that look exactly like this! I haven't got photos of mine but I didn't even think of anything else when I opened this thread. See below.

I do agree that it could be a Chevron Amethyst as well.

if it is tiffany stone, it would indeed be an opal, opalized fluorite. and if it is that, be careful with it, it can dull or crack easily.

I have no idea. At first glance I thought it was amethyst. But it does look like that opalized flourite that was posted.

Hmmm...I had heard of tiffany stone but I guess didn't pay much attention. However when someone posts something like the OP's stone and asks "is it opal" I guess LD and I had the same reaction - that it doesn't look like Australian or Ethiopian opal not thinking of other opalised stones which, like tiffany stone, are a different animal altogether.

Here's a closeup from the Mineral Matters link:

So-called Tiffany Stone (AKA Bertrandite, Ice Cream Opal, etc.) often has vivid purple coloration but is seldom translucent as the OP's stone appears to be. Material from that location also occurs in many other colors. Common opal or opalite (without play of color) can occur in nearly any color: black, purple, white, pink, blue, yellow, green, etc.

There's also another source of purple/white opalite in Zacatecas, Mexico. It's often sold under the trade name "Morado Opal." If the OP's stone is actually opal it's probably that material. But based on the images provided my first guess would be amethyst of some kind.

Thanks for that added info Rick, much appreciated.
