Can I ask how many Canadians shop here?

I’m nervous about international shipping right now. Considering posting items for Canadian buyers only, or maybe I should just wait.

What do you think?

Aah please include US

Well there does seems to be a struggle with international postage going from Florida to Ottawa but I was what they called 'once burned twice shy' and haven't shipped to Canada since. I wonder if it is difficult to track fro Canada to the US?

I'm in the U.S. but willing to wait until you are comfortable to ship, so if I end up buying anything I'm fine with waiting for it to be shipped later. I also have a Canadian address.

I. Am. Canadian. :lol::lol::lol:
And I shop here, and I wonder the same thing!

I have never had any difficulty receiving anything. Things are slower now with the pandemic, but still arriving safely.

I think it depends on who you ship with. Just with everything going on in the world, I know I would feel very nervous if a higher-value item was taking it’s sweet time to get to it’s destination :(

I have stuff I really want to sell before my second baby is born (September!) but I also don’t want the anxiety of worrying about shipping delays... I appreciate any and all advice.

I’m sorry you got burned shipping to Ottawa!!

Maybe case by case makes the most sense! And I can sell to patient buyers, and definitely to those with Canadian addresses.

The benefit is that when I ship within Canada I don’t have to label on the package what the contents are, or what the value is. Much less anxiety-inducing. And very easy to track. And less expensive to send out.

But I am aware that a lot of PSers (the majority??) live outside of Canada.

Excellent news!!!

Do you think it’s legit to put some kind of disclaimer about the buyer either paying for insured shipping, or bearing the responsibility if anything goes awry?

Ok thank you everyone for commenting! I am going to post and take things case by case, and also find out about how to insure items when shipping internationally. And even domestically, for that matter! Thanks <3 and hope you all are well. Stay tuned for my epic jewellery clear out!!

I think that's always legit, pandemic or not. There are too many variables. Customs, things getting lost, things being put on front doorsteps and stolen, unscrupulous buyers who will claim something didn't arrive when it did...I know lots of Canadians want to try to avoid paying duty with USPS uninsured shipping (because insured shipping and companies like FedEx universally charge the duty and 90% of the time USPS uninsured shipping flies under the radar and doesn't get charged), but as a seller I'd say it's too big of a risk.

I once paid $50 shipping from Canada for a ring - I didn't think to ask if it could be sent for less, but Hey, I did get the package within a week.

Yeah. Always some extra considerations when shipping across the border, but I do know how much I appreciate it when Americans have sold to me! Thanks for your $0.02!

I’m in Canada and have sold items to the US and some have taken 5 weeks to get there. However, if I send FedEx express it’s gotten to the US the next day. I have also ordered items from the US and I’ve waited up to 5-6 weeks for items unless the sender sent it to me via FedEx express. I just tell the people I sell to that there are delays and they are out of my control. Hopefully they understand we are in unusual circumstances. Hope this helps.

I recently got a package from the US, FedEx is used for jewellery shipments and it came quite quickly.

Definitely helpful. Thank you!

Good to know! That probably included insurance? Or express shipping? My best guess.

I've always used Canada Post express which is the only way it ships to the US. Under description I always put Accessory Component (s). Shipping has been delayed. The last 3 items I shipped, the recipients got their packages in approx. 10 days whereas it's normally 5 business days. It's a good idea to include signature required where hopefully the package wont be left in a mailbox or porch. I think it works out to about $10 more on average. If you can get a good rate with Fed Ex, I'd say go for it. I always find them pricey cause I don't have a business account. Tracking is pretty good with Canada Post. You get updates as the package moves.

LOL @ Begonia.

There are definitely some of us in canada not buying because most things are sold in the us and we don’t want any x-border hassle, so there might be some pent-up Canadian demand .... :)

congratulations on your second little one!!

Oh man, tell me about it! My online shopping in general has taken a dive... except with amazon... sigh! Lol

Thanks so much for the congrats, and the extra motivation to get my act together and post some stuff!!

I try to only buy from Canada, where I live. But I've never had any problem with receiving anything from the US. I gladly pay the duty (HST) and shipping. It's sad when vendors don't want to even try to ship to Canada. It may take longer, but with tracking, which I will gladly pay for, it's really not that bad.

Hi! Fellow Canadian here.

I regularly buy jewelry from the US... the packages usually come by FedEx or UPS, sometimes Canada Post. No issues yet. I actually received an item from New York state during COVID via FedEx. So far, so good.

As far as shipping jewelry items *to* US, that's different. I've only done it a few times, always with FedEx... never any issues with lost parcels, etc. But insurance is a different story. Last time I checked, Canada Post would not provide any insurance if the item was declared as jewelry, precious metal, gems, etc. The only shipper I could find that offered insurance for such items was FedEx, but they had a fairly low cap on what they would insure for (to US). I don't know what rules apply for shipping jewelry domestically.

If any Canadians have found a way to ship higher-value jewelry items to the US (or within Canada) with appropriate insurance coverage, please share! And I'm talking about shipping as a private individual. I'm guessing that people in the trade may have commercial insurance they can use, that we can't (?)

I have some things I’m considering selling but am a bit leery of cross-border shipping to the US due to volume delays. My local Canada Post station said they’re seeing Christmas volumes with COVID restrictions for handling. Hence, there can be slowdowns. She also told me they’re not offering signature r-required options at the moment.

Couriers may be the better option, these days?
