Can I ask how many Canadians shop here?

@anne_h I called our household insurance company and was advised that once the item is sold, my insurance doesn’t cover shipping. She suggested coverage through a jewelry insurance company. I checked out Jewelers Mutual and they require an appraisal to be provided.

I once shipped diamonds to a US vendor for setting, but because I owned them there was no issue. Crazy-sounding to me, the agent advised to put a declaration value of a couple hundred bucks and call them costume... This to discourage/lessen the chances of them being stolen.

Thanks @SparklieBug !

That's a creative idea I hadn't thought of. I do have my jewelry insured, but my policy states that only when it's on my person or in my house. If I let anyone borrow it, or move it out of my home, it's no longer insured. But an interesting idea...

Like OP, I am still interested in solving the issue of shipping higher value items to the US... it expands the options for selling a personal piece. Right now I usually consign through JbG, but I have a few things I may prefer to sell on my own...

Hi! Fellow Canadian here.

I regularly buy jewelry from the US... the packages usually come by FedEx or UPS, sometimes Canada Post. No issues yet. I actually received an item from New York state during COVID via FedEx. So far, so good.

As far as shipping jewelry items *to* US, that's different. I've only done it a few times, always with FedEx... never any issues with lost parcels, etc. But insurance is a different story. Last time I checked, Canada Post would not provide any insurance if the item was declared as jewelry, precious metal, gems, etc. The only shipper I could find that offered insurance for such items was FedEx, but they had a fairly low cap on what they would insure for (to US). I don't know what rules apply for shipping jewelry domestically.

If any Canadians have found a way to ship higher-value jewelry items to the US (or within Canada) with appropriate insurance coverage, please share! And I'm talking about shipping as a private individual. I'm guessing that people in the trade may have commercial insurance they can use, that we can't (?)

Anne

Hi Anne, thank you so much for sharing. I phoned FedEx today and they are going to get back to me in 3-5 business days with some info. I think you can insure with them for up to $1000 regularly for jewellery, but I don't know what happens after that. Hopefully I'll get some answers!

I have some things I’m considering selling but am a bit leery of cross-border shipping to the US due to volume delays. My local Canada Post station said they’re seeing Christmas volumes with COVID restrictions for handling. Hence, there can be slowdowns. She also told me they’re not offering signature r-required options at the moment.

Couriers may be the better option, these days?

Darn. This was essentially what I was expecting. Tricky times for mailing stuff!

This is what FedEx also told me—$1000 limit for jewelry. If the item is more expensive, they suggested I use private insurance. DHL doesn't ship jewelry and I think that UPS also refuses jewelry.

Canada Post will not ship jewelry, period. That Canada Post will not ship jewelry at all, makes me rather cranky. USPS ships jewelry (with higher values than FedEx allows for), so what on earth is the problem with Canada Post? Doesn't say much for a trust level of a) their system, or b) their employees. Most annoying. [Insert foot-stomp, here, LOL!]

Good to know! And I agree- super annoying!!

Ok you lovelies have motivated me! Thanks for the gentle nudge! I've posted some things for sale and will figure out the shipping. Time for me to declutter! <3

I will post again in this thread when I hear back from FedEx later this week. Hopefully they are helpful!

Fedex finally got back to me. It would seem that usually they will cover up to $1000 CAD, but that they have SUSPENDED THAT OPTION due to covid-19! What an absolute pain!

I understand. But it sure leaves a Canadian without much options :(
I think I am going to try and sell locally, and/or eventually sell by driving across the border and using USPS.

There are definitely some of us in canada not buying because most things are sold in the us and we don’t want any x-border hassle, so there might be some pent-up Canadian demand .... :)

congratulations on your second little one!!

Well said! I am in Canada and feel this way exactly!

Yeah. Always some extra considerations when shipping across the border, but I do know how much I appreciate it when Americans have sold to me! Thanks for your $0.02!

Ditto. I shop from places in the US all the time and am really grateful when I don't have to ship to a parcel pickup across the border and drive to get it. Especially now that the borders are closed.

I just wouldn't ship in either direction without insurance or tracking. When I have to ship back to the US (with large ticket items of jewelry) I use FedEx. I know they don't insure as high as I would like, but they have never lost a package yet.

So far I can’t find any options for insurance :(
I may resort to selling locally *cries*

I think the best option would be going through a jeweler like DK that can send a label under his insurance or if the buyer is unwilling to do that make sure that they know the risks and that they take full responsibility if anything happens tp the package.

Canadian here! I took a look at your listings - do you happen to have any tennis bracelets? I'm in the market for a starter one.

Hmm. Might be hard to find in my small town but I will look into it! Good idea!

I wish I did! Lol! I have an awesome cz one from berricle... if you need a practice one, I suggest starting there ;)

@pearaffair Have you looked at Jewelers Mutual? They were highly recommended by the bench I use.

I believe they don’t insure once a piece is out of your possession aka mailed/shipped. I think the best plan for me is to wait for FedEx to insure up to $1000 again, or cross the border (*one day*) and mail from USPS. But if anyone hears of anything else, do let me know! :)

When I spoke with our household insurer, I was informed that if I own the piece I'm shipping, they will insure it. If it's sold, and I ship it, they don't insure because I don't own it anymore. Fair enough.

On a tangent but following the aforementioned logic, one could ship an unsold item to an approved middle-party (a trusted vendor) for a fee, and once there, the vendor could verify the item as described. The buyer would sent the money to the vendor, who would ship insured (at buyer's cost) to the buyer. Kind of a lot like an escrow service.

Further, I suppose the seller could also ask for a "large" deposit (like 95% of the agreed-upon price) from the buyer to show goodwill, and the item would still be in the seller's name, as it's not fully paid for. :D

Haha oh why is it so hard to insure items in Canada? It’s madness!

I think a loop hole would be that if the item is sold under family and friends, the only ones who know it's sold are the 2 parties involved. If there is no "invoice" or request for money, it's not sold. I guess we can look at that option. Shipping is barbaric from Canada. Absolutely disgusting. I like going to the US to mail stuff. So much better. I have a friend, who likes to come with me to Buffalo to shop, she's like, come on Thelma, let's ride like the wind. LMAO I always have company. LOL

Yep. Mailing from the US is 100% better, omg. Hopefully that becomes an option again one of these days! Mama needs to fill the bling bank, lol!

Hello my fellow Canadians! I hope you don't mind me tagging you, but I'm going to be listing a ton of stuff on LT and some of them are rather nice things, too (in my humble opinion)... of course I would much much rather ship domestically so please keep an eye out if you're on the hunt for something sparkly and new to you!

Hope you're all doing well <3
