Can I trust reports on Emerald EGL/UGS and GII

Quotation from an independent appraiser on Pricescope:
They (UGS) are a division of EGL-USA. They specialize in putting large numbers on small documents that can be used as selling materials for jewelers. They are very prolific and very optimistic.

My opinion: EGL USA is not highly regarded in the diamond world and is even less highly regarded in the coloured stone world. Let's not even get started on why I feel it is very wrong for an independent gem testing lab to be putting a dollar value on the stones they verify.

Rocku - you're venturing into VERY dangerous territory if you're even thinking about buying an Emerald from Ebay (not sure if you are) but it's the quickest way to get ripped off.

To build on what Chrono has already said, are you aware that lab reports can be "made"? I'm not saying this one has, quite the contrary, but If you're going to spend a decent amount of money, make sure you spend it wisely, get a reputable lab report and buy from a reputable dealer. I can't stress that enough with Emeralds.

I think earlier in one of your threads we have shared the labs that collectively we would use and trust for colored stones. They are US: GIA, AGL; Europe: GRS, Gubelin, does Gem-A do testing?; Asia: AIGS, GIT, GIA, GRS Thailand

Ones that I'm not sure about: Emil Gem Lab (Thailand), Burapha, SSEF (Swiss). I also know there is one in India that is generally considered reliable and trustworthy - whether they can test for more invasive treatments I cannot recall - anybody know the name?

Please feel free to add to, share your experiences or edit the above. I know it incomplete and is largely based solely on my personal experience and knowledge.

SSEF are good.

Gem-A - do you mean the one in the UK? If so, I don't think they do testing.

Yes, that one. They seem to be so active that I just assumed they'd have a testing capability, but I admit it was a leap on my part.

Not such a leap! They did have a lab until 2007 or 2008 but it closed. For trade they will accept diamonds in to send to GIA but they don't do any testing themselves. :((

I got it, thank you!
