When my parents were newlyweds, they bought two English Springer Spaniel puppies, brothers, because they went to get one, there were only two of the litter left and they were obviously bonded, so Mom and Dad took both. Those dogs lived to be around 12 years old. They were never apart. Then one of them passed away suddenly. His brother had shown no signs of illness but he, too, suddenly passed away within a few days. We kids were devastated to lose both of them. The vet told my parents that it's not uncommon for the survivor of a bonded pair to die of a broken heart. That was in the late 1960s, so the phenomenon was known back then.
