Was looking at this blue sapphire on gemfix for our 5 years anniversary and this piece of stone caught my eye.

I'm terrible at distinguishing different sapphire blues, to me this one looks a little pale on the still picture, but on the video it shows a pretty decent blue.

Could someone help evaluate whether it worth the price? Do you think it's cut well? and is that color change something desired for or not?

Thanks for your help!

It’s not a very saturated blue (doesn’t pop with a rich colour). The cut is excellent though.

1. Which blue are you looking for? Do you have example pictures?
2. Does it have to be unheated?
3. Shape preference?

Cut is great! Color change Is totally personal. Some people love it and others hate it. I like it, but what's most important is what you (or your significant other) thinks about it.

What is your ideal color, shape, and budget? And does heat vs no heat matter to you?

Color shift in blue sapphires typically brings the price lower. People love blue sapphires because they are “blue, “ not blue some of the time. However, you may love the color shift. This stone is around $2k/ct because it’s an unheated Sri Lankan sapphire, and it’s beautifully cut. The only issue is the color shift, and the saturation isn’t top for a Ceylon sapphire, but it’s not bad either.

Does the GIA report show Sri Lankan provenance? Is there a video of the stone in its violet shift?

As for the price, it seems fair.

Thank you!

Sorry I don't have an perfect example picture in mind.. Generally I hope it's not too dark, not greenish, maybe a tiny purplish is fine.
2. Does it have to be unheated?
Hmm we still lean towards unheated, but maybe it should not matter that much?
3. Shape preference?
Round or Oval are our favorite.

Thanks! We are still exploring, round and oval are our favorite shapes, glowy blue with reflections might be the ideal look, as for budget maybe something around 5k? We took a look and now think maybe only unheated could get us something looking nice enough within budget.

The GIA report didn't contain geo origin and from the video I cannot really figure out whether the color shifted or not. Comparing it with some other heated stones such as this one: https://gemfix.com/gems/sapphire-blue-11-1312 , I can now see the sacturation difference clearly.

Blue sapphires come in a very wide range of blues, the first step is to work out what colour or colours are acceptable, the first one you have selected is more of a mid blue with strong hints of purple/violet and grey. As the others have said the cutting will make it sparkle but the colour will not be as bright because of the modifiers it has. Some people prefer lighter to medium blues and blues with more purple in them, there is nothing wrong with that, it's just personal taste. The second sapphire selected is a darker closer to between Royal and Peacock blue, ie a totally different colour.

My preference is for the round blue to violet sapphire. It's definitely a fair price and looks quite nice. I also think color change is neat.
