when the stone is already set? Or is this something that has to be done before the stone is set? TIA!!

Oh, I'd be REALLY interested in a trade response to this... ;))

I had a tourmaline reset in an E/W argentium silver setting by DanielM. When Caren sent me the pics, the prongs weren't 'fine' enough as per the claw that I had requested. She said it wouldn't be a problem to file them down- and they did and it all turned out perfect - but I'm not sure if that was done while the stone was set, or if they had to unset and file, then reset.

Good question!

I want to know that also. I had a pair of 8 prong martinis made and the tips of the prongs are square and flat as they curve toward the stone. I would like them to be clawed. I don't know if they could be retipped and reshapped. It doesn't seem like there is enough metal to work with. I would be will ing to have the stones removed and reset.

+1 I am in the same boat. I would LOVE to know the answer to this as well!

I don't know if you saw my setting before Adams bench redid my prongs. They were stumpy ugly things and now they are claw. They were able to work the metal to make it into beautiful claw prongs. Of course this was done before the diamond was set.

my 6 prong solitaire had thick bulky prongs .I sent my ring to BGD .diamond was recut and prongs were shaved to claw prongs (I think they charged $75 for the prongs ) and they were rhodium dipped .the result : new beautiful claw prongs !

Wouldn't the stone need to be unset in order to be filed down without damaging the stone? :read:

Yeah, unfortunately that's what I'm thinking, but I hope a trade pro will be kind enough to weigh in. Maybe it can be done after all! I would love to fix blobby prongs without having to unset the stone.

Sure, prongs can be filed down if there is enough metal there to start with. I presume they'd take the stone completely out. Otherwise, it would be in the jeweler's way. I don't know how much it would cost just to do that modification.

Bumpity bump...

Any trade pros? Thank you!
