FI and I have our eye on a stone and setting from BGD.

We live in Ontario so already know that we have to add 13% tax to the cost of the engagement ring after we convert the amount to Canadian dollars.

Lesley from BGD has told me that they use FedEx to ship items (they charge no cost for shipping).

What costs would we pay, if any, to FedEx for receiving the items?

I''ve heard of a Fed Ex brokerage fees in other forums (not necessarily having to do with buying jewellery from the USA) but I don''t know if and when a brokerage fee would apply.

Are there any fellow Canucks (or anyone, really lol) who have bought from an online US vendor that can shed some light?

Thanks.

Thanks :)

I guess sorry for posting such a similar question. I''m just so nervous/excited that we are getting close to confirming exactly what we want that I don''t wanna skip the "details" like all those extra costs for us Canadians. Just wanna make sure I don''t get any surprises later.

Its really too bad about the 13% tax....wish there was a way around it.

Actually one more thing....

What''s with the 2.5% credit card fee?

Is this standard for when Canadian credit cards are used to make purchases from US sites/vendors?

I guess a bank wire would eliminate this 2.5% fee?

I have never paid a brokerage fee! Just taxes.

Only way around the taxes is to cross the border and bring your ring back without declaring it. But that is illegal.

I never noticed a fee for the conversions on mt credit card, unless the rate the cc gives includes the fee, which may be the case. For bank wire you pay about $25 for your bank to process it, so by far cheaper when you factor everything in.

Ship to a Fed-Ex Depot in the USA

When you cross the border it's your responsibility to claim your purchase to the customs officer.

Should you choose to tell them, they sometimes let you go depending on value and their mood.

If you have family on vacation for 7 days they are allowed 700.00 each that doesn't get charged duty or taxes.

But this would mean I''d have to drive to the US to pick it up and have to pay taxes anyway.
So I''d have to pay the gas to get there. If FedEx borkerage fee is only $15, its cheaper to pay the fee rather than drive down.
I''m not planing a 7 day vacation to the US, so that option is out too :)
