I bought a diamond about a year ago and two things:

1) I cannot find the GIA certificate. How do I get a copy?
2) For the life of me I cannot remember which online vendor I bought it from. I remember that the website had a picture of the gemologist looking at a stone and he had a beard - I know that really helps ;)
I can''t find the company listed on web searches or vendors list on this site. Were there any mergers or anything? It was not diamonds.com, mondera, niceice, bluenile, goodold gold. Who else could it have been?

Also, I''m going to be selling this diamond. I was told by a local jeweler that diamond prices have increased over the past year. What % have they increased in general.

This is what I remember - I''ll put specific info here when I get ehe cert.
It''s:
Asscher
.94
D color
VS2
very good/very good
excellent cut (perhaps "ideal")

Hey newbie_ca,

One suggestion (and I''ve been forced to do this when I''ve misplaced or forgotten something) is to check your credit card statements from the previous year, or your check register if you paid that way. If you paid cash, or don''t keep records that long, could you contact your credit company or bank for back statments?

It probably would be easy to pick out since most of us don''t drop that kind of cash on many other things!

Maybe you''ve already done this... but sometimes I forget how much of our lives are archived on a computer somewhere!

I''ve been reading that replacing a lost GIA certificate can be expensive ($200 I think was the number I saw on one of the big online dealers) - could it be cheaper to get a new appraisal or GIA cert. done?

Good luck with finding the info!!

I like Aussie's suggestions. Google shows 76,000,000 hits for ‘diamonds’. I suspect that several of them feature an image of someone with a beard. I fear this may not be the best approach. Even if you find them, there's a decent chance that the dealer won't have a copy of your report.

GIA sells grading services to anyone who submits a stone to them and you can get a new one for under $100. Details about how to submit a stone are at www.gia.edu.

Selling prices for stones like that have gone up about 10% in the last year. You can look up some asking prices with the box at the top of the page called ‘pricescope your diamonds’. Be aware that the price you realize when you sell it is likely to be less than these offerings.

beard and a loupe...sounds like www.whiteflash.com
they have a trade up as well as a buy back policy so you won't have to worry about what to do with your diamond.

Hi newbie_ca:

If you have an appraisal, it should reference your GIA Grading Report number.
If that is the case, you can contact GIA for a replacement report or go to their website
at gia.edu for more info. Their "report check" feature might be available for your diamond if you know the report number and exact carat weight.

As far as selling your diamond...I always recommend shopping around and getting many offers then comparing the offers. You will also get a feel for what the market is paying for your diamond.
Good luck.
