Hi,

I apologize if this is a repeat, but the posts I saw about this setting were a couple years old. I'm new to the whole engagement ring buying process and my girlfriend really likes the Cartier 1895 classic 4 prong (not pave) with a platinum band like this: http://www.bridal.cartier.com/brida...-rings/solitaire-1895/n4163600-solitaire-1895 and I am curious what options I have.

She is a simple girl and doesn't need a fancy name, but does like the Cartier setting the best. Can I just get the setting from Cartier and a diamond elsewhere? Is that even a good idea? Should I be looking for a replica? I'm still coming up to speed on the 4Cs, so I'm not decided on the diamond but was thinking of spending in the neighborhood of $6-10k for the setting and diamond. Any ideas on diamonds for this setting would be much appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Hi jd,

I don't believe you can buy the Cartier setting separately. Having a replica made would be a good way to go if she doesn't need the Cartier name...you'll save some money avoiding the Cartier markup. You do have a nice enough budget to get an authentic 1895, however, if you think that'd be safest.

BGD makes one of the nicer 1895-like settings I've seen, called "Elegance"

Wow, thanks for the information! I think from what I've seen I like the VC Trueste and the MWM BT the best. I didn't see the price of either on the forum and have information requests out for both, but what is the price of each setting roughly?

Also, I'm not really sure how to select the proper diamond for the setting. The proper depth, etc. Can someone provide some direction on how to go about it? I'd like to get something that is 1-1.5 ct but I'm not sure how nice of a diamond that size I can get with my overall budget being $6-10k.

6-10K and 1-1.5K is quite a spread. About 2000 for the setting.

That's fair. I'm sorry for being so broad, I was just trying to put a range down since I don't know enough about the quality of diamond that can be obtained within the amount of money I would like to spend. I don't know how much the clarity and color will play into how the diamond will look in the setting or given those, what size (weight) will fit in with the setting the best.

I know she likes the sparkling look of the 1895 we saw and would like it to be "big" which I took to mean around a carat.

I'm willing to spend up to $10k, but I'd rather not spend all the way up to my limit if I won't be able to noticeably tell the difference between the color and clarity of different diamonds if that makes sense.

I like this one you provided http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1452027.asp?b=16&a=12&c=77&cid=131

I also found this one. Is this comparable? The table is a bit higher %. How does that affect things?

Also, I read somewhere that JA will match prices from BN except the signature ideal collection, is that true?

No, that one from BN is not as well cut. The pavilion angle needs to be 40.6 to 41.0 in most cases. This one likely has leakage. And the table is a bit large. I try to stick to 54-58% tables. The problem with BN is that they don't provide pictures or idealscope images, so you just don't know what you are getting. If the numbers looked better, you might consider taking the chance, but that stone does not appeal to me (other than I like fluorescence and G VS1).

I do not know JA's price matching policies, but more than likely it would be in regard to the same virtual stone posted on both sites.

Ok, I've been looking at diamonds for a while and am leaning between these two. Can I get your thoughts opinions? The prices are fairly comparable.

I know this one has an inclusion in the center, but am not sure how big of a deal it is.

1.09 I VS2 Ex Cut, Symmetry, Polish, depth 61.8%, table 55%, crown ang 34.5, pavilion ang 40.8

I wasn't able to get an IS on this one..

and this:

Diameter of second stone? Did James Allen say the first one was totally eyeclean? I think that inclusion would bug me but stone 1 is probably larger than stone 2.

6.43x6.46x3.97mm

The JA rep didn't specifically say it was eye clean, but "guaranteed" I wouldn't see it, haha.

Are you open to antique cut rounds at all? If you may get more stone for your money. I'm not sure how color sensitive you/she may be - but sometimes you can find old stones in higher colors

Here's a very pretty one:

Old world diamonds has a big selection too:

The girdle might be too thin on this one but it is a high color and pretty:
