Cartier or Blue Nile for rolling ring?

As a last minute request for Christmas, my girlfriend told me she would like a rolling ring. I didn't know much about them so I did some research last night and found out that Cartier is basically the originator of the rolling ring. While researching, I noticed that Blue Nile has a couple rolling rings (http://www.bluenile.com/keyword_content_check.jsp?qt=rolling+ring) as well. I'm a brand whore myself as is my girlfriend, however, like most women, she likes shines things. Looking at the Cartier website, I see that the cheapest rolling ring I can get with diamonds is $2,375, which, unfortunately, is more than I can dish out considering the money I'm spending on other gifts. Looking at the Blue Nile site, I see I can get a tri-color rolling ring with diamonds for $1,250, although the diamonds aren't of the highest quality. In a woman's opinion, would I be better off going with the classic Cartier rolling ring with no diamonds or the Blue Nile rolling ring with diamonds, even though the diamonds are minimal and not the clearest?

On top of that, is it worth $450 more to get the Cartier rolling ring that has the brand name etched on it? I would imagine that the name would be so small that it would hardly be readable, making the $450 extra not seem all that much worth it. Correct me if I'm wrong, please. And, are rolling rings true to size? If my girlfriend wears a size 7 rings, will she be a size 7 for a rolling ring? I can't exactly take her to the store with me to try it on. It's supposed to be a surprise. Would Cartier allow me to replace it for another size if it didn't fit her, or am I left with what I purchased since it's a rolling ring and is prone is scratches from the movement and is considered "used" as soon as it's tried on?

The BN diamonds are probably perfectly adequate.

That said, I prefer no diamonds. Whether the brand name is worth it to you or her is up to you. Brand names are not about being so small it is hard to read, the wearer will still get something out of wearing a "Cartier." You have to weight how much extra happiness she gets out of it compared to the price difference.

I also prefer with no diamonds. While I agree with the fact that the Blue Nile ones are "fine" (I really like the hammered one, so thanks for posting the link!), in this case, with the genuine Cartier one being *only* $450 more than the Blue Nile one, I would probably spring for the Cartier one. I don't always believe that the brand name is best (I buy store-brand groceries, shop at TJ Maxx for bargains, etc.), but there are some things to me that would be extra special if they were brand name, and I think this would be one of them, at least *for me*. As you said, Cartier is kind of known for their rolling rings, so if she asked for a rolling ring specifically, I think it would be very awesome to get the Cartier version.

Cartier for sure.

I recently shopped for a rolling ring, and I went with the Cartier. The model I have (the Small) was $1000, so, actually only $200 more than the Blue Nile plain ring. Also, FTR, the Small Trinity is 2.9mm wide per band while the BN version is 2.5mm. For me it was a no-brainer to go with the original Cartier- and getting the famous red box made it extra cool, I admit!

As far as returns, I believe you can exchange it for size as long as it's not been engraved, but double-check!

It would be really special to get her a Cartier. However, the one from Blue Nile with the diamonds looks really nice too. Blue Nile has permanent 10% off promotions, so if you got the BN one, use SANTA10 to get money off.

I got a diamond cross from BN and a few other jewellery pieces. I was pleasantly surprised by how sparkly their non-certified diamonds are, so I wouldn't worry about that with BN - they're a quality shop.

I speak, though, as one who owns more than her fair share of Tiffany and also a De Beers neckalce, which was so ridiculously tiny and expensive but I don't care because I actually own something from De Beers. So I also agree that a gift from Cartier would be awesome.

I think it comes down to, diamonds or no diamonds? If she would prefer diamonds, and doesn't know anything about jewellery brands, then the BN one will be a hit. But if she's into luxury brands, the red box will probably mean more than the diamonds.

I can't speak for the quality or service of BN, as I have never had any contact or purchases thru them. I have also not bought anything from Cartier (... yet ;)) ), but I did have the chance last month to try on a variety of sizes of the Cartier tri gold trinity rings while in Las Vegas and there are pics and prices posted here:

Maybe some help in those threads for you. I would really love one in the future, and having tried these on in a size 58, I would go for the XS Trinity ring - the one with the 2.9mm each bands. On my size 8 fingers, the others looked too wide.

These were exactly my thoughts. Personally, I would rather have the Cartier no-diamond one. Even though I am generally not a brand person, I think it would be really special and very cool to have a geniuine Cartier piece.

This thread has taken a dangerous turn... and by that I mean... I am going to Las Vegas next week and I have no clue how I'm going to keep myself out of Cartier!! I am surprised at how "affordable" some of those are! If they have the super skinny one in stock, if it's still $750, I don't see how I could say no!

Sonnyjane- you just have to go with the flow!! don't fight the urge, honey, just get it!! you deserve it, you admire it, its affordable, you'll be a better human being once its on your hand, you owe it to yourself... Life is too short not to wear good jewelry!!!

Go - take one for the team - try stuff on, post some pics in a Cartier thread --- its just part of being a team player!!!   :naughty: :naughty: :naughty: :Up_to_something: :Up_to_something: :Up_to_something:

(man, I'm getting extra good at enabling over the Christmas season - consider me like a "Christmas elf"!!)

I wish they had the white gold/ceramic one in a skinnier version. I was on their website earlier today and saw that they have a gorgeous sapphire version, which I quickly had to erase from my brain when I saw it was $26K lol!

HI:

Cartier. I just love Cartier!

cheers--Sharon

I've tried on some Cartier rolling rings, and I just love the way they look and feel. I'm sure BN could make an exact replica - except for the logo, of course - but since the price difference for the plain gold version is so small I'd just go with the original. To me the choice between a scattered diamond version from BN and a plain gold Cartier ring complete with the Cartier cachet is easy - Cartier, for sure!

On a side note, my girlfriend mentioned that if I do get her a rolling ring, I have to put it in another box so she doesn't think it's an engagement ring and get all excited. She's waiting, or should I say pushing, for one of those as well  . So if I do get the Cartier, I'll have to take the ring out of the fancy red box it comes in and put it in somehting else that doesn't look like a ring box, and just give her the box later on.

I thank everybody for their help and suggestions.

No diamonds, tho.

If she likes the brand then definitely go with Cartier. If not, I ordered my mom a rolling ring from here for Christmas and it is a nice quality! I am in process of getting it engraved for her! http://www.rollingring.com/

I want the Cartier rolling ring with no diamonds in the very skinny version. I dream about it and lust after it. I'm not a brand person at all and own nothing else that it name brand but want that ring. The blue nile one wouldn't be the same to me.

For that price difference, I would get the Cartier. To me, the quality and name of the house of Cartier is worth that relatively small jump in price.

I have the extra skinny ring from Cartier (Mother's Day gift from the kids and husband). I vote Cartier! It comes in a very fancy box, which I have sitting in my closet as a kind of shrine to the House of Cartier ;)

Those who have the Cartier XS Trinity Ring that retails for $1,000, could you tell me if it's a true to size fit? I'm worried that I'm going to get her regular size and that it's not going to fit properly and Cartier is going to tell me that I can't exchange it since she tried it on and is considered "used" at that point.

CArtier sizes in european sizes. You can email them with her ring size and get them to 'translate' it for you. I think if you purchase it and it is not right, I'm sure with in a certain time frame, they would exchange it --- but ask about that first.

I really liked the XS on - it slid/rolled on beautifully! Very well made, great size and would still allow for another skinny band to be stacked beside it, if you want to eventually up the bling factor at another Christmas!

This thread is not helping the green monster! :Up_to_something: <---- see???

Question: anyone know how wide these rings are? I thought about the classic, but the small size would be more instant gratification...sigh. I want I want I want!

To the OP: I've tried on the classic and it's weird but just trying it on it FELT really nice, like butter. I know it sounds :twirl: loopy :twirl: but it really does!

Why don't you ask Cartier? They would best be able to answer that question.

There is nothing better than the real deal. Definitely Cartier. If she ever wants to sell, the name means everything! I know people who wear them as a wedding band. I thought that was what they were intended for.

I would get the Cartier. This is one of the few pieces that I actually like though without diamonds. I have tried on the XS and it was true to size.

Too bad you can't take your girlfriend to Cartier to pick it out. When I went with DH to get my braclet they brought us champagne in the backroom and just had fantastic customer serivce the entire time. The experience was wonderful and it was just fun to walk around. Perhaps you can do something like give her a Cartier box and then go shopping in the store for the actual ring?
