New to the forum, hi all! My girlfriend and I were at a mall yesterday picking up a gift for my niece and for the hell of it, we walked into a couple of jewelry stores (based on my searches, this is frowned upon on this forum?). We went into Zales, and initially, my girlfriend had this idea of a cushion cut halo as the center, with trillions on the side. Total carat weight might be in the 2-2.5 area with the center stone being 1-1.5. Fine. My motto is: she's wearing this forever, she'll most likely have to get something customized, whatever makes her happy

The jeweler showed us a 1 carat princess cut diamond, I1/G. It is their trademark celebration diamond. Based on some searches, it sounds like that type of diamond, and mall jewelry stores are frowned upon here. Anyway, my GF liked it, and asked if it was possible to customize her ring using that 1 carat princess cut. She'd want two trillions on the side, total carat weight of the trillions would be .6 carats, or if she wanted to go bigger, 1 carat total weight with a 1 ct center stone halo. At the most we're looking at 10 grand, which is less than what an independent jeweler quoted me for a 1.5 cushion with half carat trillions, and it's a VS1.

At the end of the day, I want to get her what she's happy with. But I came away uneasy for a few reasons:

1) I'm not sure what type of certification Zales has. I sent a follow-up e-mail this morning to which the guy responded by saying it is certified but he wouldn't say if it's GIA or something else.

2) Celebration grand diamonds don't seem to get a lot of hype on the internet.

3) I've been told to avoid I's at all costs. I think you have to take all 4 c's into account, it's a pretty good color, but the clarity scares me off a bit. Not sure about the cut, awaiting that response

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, I think the most important thing that I took away from yesterday's experience is that she doesn't necessarily need a 1.5 carat center stone. A 1 carat princess cut looked just as big as a 1.5 cushion, so we're playing around with this idea now. At the end of the day, there are two locations that are my top choices, and neither are franchise stores. We may still go to them with a different idea, but I'd just like to get people's thoughts on Zales/Celebration diamonds in general. Thanks!

Thanks.

Zales?... :knockout: Not likely to be GIA graded.

That's what I figured. I came away uneasy about the whole thing. The guy wasn't being pushy or anything, and we sat down with him for a good half hour, if not more, so that was a positive. Hard to explain about the uneasiness. I wasn't sold, I guess.

In my experience, Zales is crap quality. I wouldn't go down to an I in clarity and there is no way that it will be eye-clean. I like to stay above SI1. I can guarantee that the center diamond will not be cut well either by Zales. You can do MUCH, much better putting together a custom ring using a PS vendor. We can help you find exactly what your GF likes and the quality will be WAY better. $10k is a great budget, you can get her exactly what she wants AND it will be GIA/AGS certified and good quality.

Stay far away from these types of stores. You'll be overpaying for a lower quality stone.

Since you're looking for a princess cut, I would suggest reaching out to either Whiteflash ( www.whiteflash.com ) or Good Old Gold ( www.goodoldgold.com ), as both of these vendors stock high-quality princess cuts and can also offer you a variety of setting suggestions.

If you give either of these vendors your specifications, they will be able to work up something both you and your wife-to-be can feel proud of.

Best of luck!

Just so we are clear, she wants a 1 ct + three stone with trillion sides. That sound about right? All for 10k?

If so, yes please don't buy a g (in whatever grading system they use) and I clarity. You can do much better.

Center stone: 1 carat to 1.5
Trillions on the sides or baguettes, tcw being .5-1.
Cut: Who knows at this point, she was dead set on a cushion, but princess cut is also an option now.

I have 8 months before I plan to propose (have it laid out already), but it's frustrating b/c we've been to 10+ stores/independent jewelers and we still don't have a concrete idea of what it is she wants.

well your budget is very realistic. currently i can find G 1 ct AGS and GIA graded stones for about 6k, and that would leave you enough for a setting with side stones, even if you went with a more expensive custom route.

BUT, sense you have lots of time, first thing first is to NOT shop at mall stores ;) and second is to figure out what she likes. Cushions and princesses arent that far off. Both square. Both can be done with side stones, princesses with trillions, cushions with chubby trillions or pears. Really they are quite similar looks.

did she like any other style of setting?

Does she prefer white gold or platinum?

White gold

Please give the experts here your budget and let them help you. They will find a much better, prettier stone. Please Don't buy from Zales. It more than likely isn't GIA certified so you have no idea what you are really buying.

White gold

Great -- that will help your budget! I recommend either X1 or 14K white gold. X1 will not have to be rhodium plated, and 14K will require replating a lot less frequently than 18K (and it's less expensive... win-win!).

Also, would your FF consider a three stone setting with an old cut cushion?? This is a great buy and would give LOTS MORE SPREAD (6.81 x 6.41 mm) than anything I've been able to find... and it's really pretty. (don't let the J color scare you -- old cuts tend to face up whiter due to the faceting pattern). It's EGL USA, but may be worth considering. :praise: ;))
