Hello! I am very new to this board and have read a few of the other posts and every one seems extremely helpful. I''m hoping you could all help me. I have been looking for a 1.25 ct Ceylon Sapphire in 18K W. gold maybe with diamond accecents but I have no clue what an appropriate price would be. All the information I have been finding seems to beat-around-the-bush about pricing. I did find a ring though that was about 3g of 18K w. gold, 1.23ct Oval shape Ceylon sapphire and about .06ct diamonds of SI2 clarity I color for $950. There is a no-questions asked 30 day money back policy. I don''t know the exact grading of the sapphire but the is a certified appriaser in my area who has a good reputaion. I am very nervous about spending the right amount for the right quality as this will be an engagement ring.

any suggestions?

Hi and welcome.

Ceylon just means that the stone is from Sri Lanka (Ceylon is the old name for the country), and doesn't give us much information to go on.

Pricing coloured stones is MUCH more difficult than diamonds due to the number of variables at play. Colour is especially important and certain shades can carry a huge premium over others if they are particularly sought after.

For an engagement ring, I would decide my budget and basic ring design. Then call Wink at www.winkjones.com, tell him what you are after and your budget and see what he can find.

He has found several stones for me and some for my friends and is currently on a sapphire hunt for another of my friend's e-rings.

For such an important piece of jewellery, I wouldn't want to buy a ready made piece.

PS. To know if that piece was any good for the price, we'd need good photos, stats on the centre stone including any heat treatment etc

We are on a tight budget for the moment if everything has to be paid in full (max at 2,000) but it can be a little more flexible if there is a payment option. We aren''t planning on getting married for about three or four years as I am in school and planning on medical school as well, education comes first but a really nice ring wouldn''t be so bad in the meantime

Since we have the time, we want to get this right. We don''t know where to start. We both want to go out and look together but we are clueless as to where to go. Neither of us know what a "good jeweler" vs. a not-so-qualified jeweler is. I don''t know what I''m looking for other than white gold or platinum and blue sapphire either round or oval shape. As for the design, I''m looking for something really simple with a thinner band as I have small hands. Thanks for your suggestion and I will definately check out that website.

The website is not the place to go - get in touch with him and ask for his help in finding something. (He also does custom jewellery - he''s done my e-ring, is doing my w-band and a few other pieces for me, and has also done custom settings for 2 other e-rings for my friends).

None of my stones have ever been on any website.

He''s also a gemmologist and really knows his stuff - I totally trust his opinion on stones. You can also see them over a video link and ask questions before you decide.

I really recommend taking your time to find the right stone that you will love forever. There are lots of sapphires in the eye-candy thread above.
