Change of heart?

So in the excitement of being told by my husband that I could upgrade my ER after 15 years, I began a frantic search for my new princess cut diamond. After searching for about a month, going back and forth on different stones, we finally settled on a 1.91 VS1-I from ERD. Now don’t get me wrong, the diamond is stunning… but it doesn’t make my heart go “pitter patter”.

Months later fast forward and I’ve become obsessed with OEC’s. They truly make my heart melt and do flip-flops. I’ve never been a RB lover, so I was surprised when I started falling in love with OEC’s. I can’t get enough of their chunky facets, and their brilliant pastel colors. I especially love when they have a “flower” pattern or what I personally call the daisy effect.

But is this all the fault of searching PS too often? I know there aren’t a lot of OEC’s on here compared to other stones. Is this maybe because I already have a princess cut (my original ER) which is being reset for my right hand?

Have you ever had a stone “speak to you”? I swear this is all the fault of an OEC that I saw on Jewels by Erica Grace. I can’t stop thinking about it, can’t can’t can’t. Oh boy, I have a feeling I’m in trouble here.

I’ve been giving this a lot of thought lately. Do I just wait it out a bit longer… maybe another 6 months and see if I still feel the same way? Gosh I wish I could just rent some bling for a few months to see what I love best – now wouldn’t that be fun! ;)

All this being said, since my princess came from ERD I could always get them to source me a new stone thanks to their upgrade policy. But that would also mean spending more money – about $6K for just the stone. Plus I would love to have a setting which I truly love (I’ve always worn just a plain solitaire).

Thoughts? Opinions?

I think diamonds do speak to you....my heart jumps at a beautiful OEC or OMC, and although mine is small, it far surpasses anything I have felt toward modern diamonds.
I hope you find what makes your heart pitter patter:)

I'm new to diamonds - I joined PS to learn more while shopping for my e-ring. I've admired a lot of different cuts but nothing really grabbed me, MRB were so-so for me. But then I learned of OECs! Woah, there's no turning back for me, I love them. The whole point of PS is to learn new things, new points of view - if OECs are what grab you, go for it.

Can PS be a bit of an enabling place? Yes. But it's enabling with a constant eye on quality too. I already have DSS and I don't even have my e-ring yet! Sheesh. I used to be of the mind that anything close to a carat was HUGE but now I have a stone that's 1.10, go figure.

I say, start checking out OECs, find out what qualities you like them to have, and start contacting vendors.

Get out and see some old cuts in person first. Macro photography is different than real life :sun: Then you can make a better decision.

If you are keeping your original princess and wearing it on your right hand, it makes sense that you would want to have something else for your upgrade. I would wait a bit and like Dreamer suggested, look at some old-cut stones in person. There is nothing wrong with switching around...you just don't want to find yourself switching over and over...plus all the expenses that come along with that can add up quickly!

THAT. I find that macro stills can portray a stone very differently to how I feel looking at it in-person - I have an antique cushion that's a dream to photograph but it doesn't do much for me IRL, and I think RBs are generally pretty boring in pics but oh, they have my heart IRL

Best confirm the seduction is real ::)

Thanks Yssie, Skippy and DD... trying to see what I can find in and around Toronto. Will start from there :wink2:

You are lucky to live ina big town!

You can visit http://www.cynthiafindlay.com in person. Don't tell them you might buy online ;)) Apparently they get snotty about that. But lots of old cuts.

I can certainly agree that you need to see some to know. But I wouldn't want two princess cuts if I were going to have two diamond rings just as I wouldn't want two rb's. That is one reason my new RHR has an asscher because I plan to keep either a round brilliant or OEC as my engagement ring.

I would think you can return the princess and then Mark can just send you a diamond to try out if you want. But it is a good idea to look locally just to define your preferences. Just don't let yourself fall in love with anything!

Too funny DD, I just sent Cynthia an e-mail today :naughty:

DS no worries this time around, I'm in no rush and will take my time 100% :wink2:

Going to see this stone on Friday afternoon... they may also have a few others, but hopefully this will give me a good idea.

I also tried looking to see if adding a "blingier" wedding ring would help change my mind. I tried on at least 30 rings, and none of them did it for me - although I really like this ring, but if I'm going to spend $5-6K on a wedding band then I'd rather that go towards an OEC if I go that route.

Well OP you just basically summed up my last few years. DH gave me the go ahead to upgrade my set. I did the diamond first. Then only 8 months ago got my dream setting. But DSS sank in quickly and though I love the round what I really wanted was a cushion-y pillow OMC. Found my dream stone purchased that and now I'm just not sure what to do. While obviously we could afford the purchase I feel horrible for making it. We could use the money elsewhere or just put it into savings. Now essentially I will have two rings for my ering. Many people told me to keep both as they are completely different looks, but I just don't think I will wear my current ring once my new one gets here. I know this is a good problem to have but still

So my advise is really go for it. I know you will loose some money but you will have your dream ring. I like to think that my ring is like my relatinship with my husband. I have always loved him, but with time and experience (and a long and winding road) we have grown into something completely different and better. I think if you stay with your current setting you will always look at it and wish you could have changed it or should have changed it. I think you should be overjoyed to wear your ring and not want to part with it even for a cleaning. As horrible as it sounds if you can take the financial hit then trade in the stone (or try selling on the secondary market) and get the OEC of your dreams! I bet the ebay mavens can get you a steal!!!!
