Changing halo engagement ring to solitaire?

Hi everyone!
I’m new here, hoping to get some advice on my engagement ring.
I’ve had my engagement ring 4 years, my husband designed it himself (admittedly I did say I liked halos at the time).

It’s. 1.5 carat emerald cut halo ring. I do love it, it’s beautiful, and have many compliments on the ring but to me it’s always been a bit ‘blingy’ and big on my finger.

I have been thinking of having the stone remade to a solitaire style on a plain band, or the stone with small baguettes. In yellow gold. Opinions on whether I’ll regret changing the ring? Thanks!

What are the dimensions of the emerald cut? I would buy a cheapo tester to wear around the house before committing to a reset.

I think your ER is beautiful and elegant, but you are the one who wears it.

Have you discussed this with your DH and is he on board with your re-set ideas?

Have you already gone to some jewelry stores and/or bought some CZ lookalikes to see what really pleases you?

If it were me, I'd consider buying an anniversary band, maybe a significant alternating round/baguette diamond band in yellow gold? And then switch off between the band and your ER ... just my 2 cents.

Yes do it life’s short and once you get that reset itch it doesn’t go away.
East/west with baguettes gets my vote - complete 180

Thanks for the advice!
The stone is quite long and thin (I wanted one like that), dimensions are 9.18 x 5.25 x 3.27 mm

My husband would rather me keep the original ring but also understands how I feel luckily! I’ve been to jewellery stores and tried some solitaire rings but good idea about the CZ!

Your ring is beautiful but I understand about feeling like you think you would be more comfortsble with a solitare or with small side baquettes. Our tastes change. You really cant go wrong with whatever you decide. All three options are beautiul. The important thing is you look down at your hand and love your ring.

good luck with this
i think it will be fabulous
i love a solitar over a halo and i love an emerald cut
if you are changing the band have you thought about a slightly wider one ?

I love the shape of your EC! I also think it’s very beautiful on your hand as is it, but also can’t wait to see it being reset :)

What is it you want to get out of your reset? For me, I like to start at the end goal and work backwards (this is one of the main strategies at Amazon and there is a whole book about it if you’re interested:lol: )

For example, my personal taste is for something non-traditional but has to be very comfortable to wear. From there, I looked at lots of different settings and eventually came up with the ‘right’ one for me.

I personally love (love!) @Niel ’s idea of setting it east-west with baguettes in YG because it’s a twist on a classic and I am a fan of YG/RG, but as other posters have said, it’s your ring and do whatever makes you smile :)

Ok here’s a tester that might work. The dimensions aren’t perfect but it will give you an approximation.

i don’t love east-west setting, but do love that baguette ring you’ve posted @lulu_ma!

@Daisys and Diamonds yes I’ve thought about a wider band but do like a thinner band (could also be because it’s on trend right now). I do think emerald cuts look a bit vintage so a wider band could work.

My main concern is I’m quite attached to this current ring as it’s sentimental even though it’s not my ideal and I’m not sure if I’ll regret changing the setting completely although I definitely would like to! I can’t tell you the number of compliments I get daily- it is a striking ring but like I said quite glitzy!

@marymm I’ve also thought about the anniversary ring idea and wearing it with my wedding band but uncertain! ‍♀️

Get the tester and try it out. I recently reset my emerald cut in yellow gold and I’m really happy with it. But I did keep my platinum setting just in case!

Hi, welcome to PS! :wavey:

Your ring is gorgeous! I can see why you get so many compliments on it!

We can’t tell you if you’ll regret resetting it or not, but before you do anything, it’s a good idea to actually see on your hand what you are envisioning. @lulu_ma ‘s link would be a great place to start. Most of us here complain about DSS (diamond shrinkage syndrome). You will be losing size. Whether or not that is an issue for you is something only you can decide.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful ring with us. I’m interested in seeing what you decide.

It’s stunning. I’d leave it as is and wear it for special bling occasions and buy a smaller emerald shaped lab diamond on a plain band for everyday.

in time (when hubby gets used to it) you could put a coloured stone into the old setting if you ever go with a totally new setting

How about a delicate solitaire with diamond melee shank and basket, still glitzy but less blingy than your current halo setting?

@lulu_ma can you show a photo of your old and new rings?

@Daisys and Diamonds I’ve actually thought about putting a sapphire in the current setting if I do re-set my ring. I think it would be really nice.

@Neptune love that ring but I think I’d prefer something a bit more simple.

I will definitely order a few CZ rings to see how I feel! It would be quite different but I do often feel like the ring is a little large so smaller may be better. I guess I won’t know until I try!

@amber0211 Here you go! My other rings are platinum so the reset emerald cut is definitely getting more wear now :)

Beautiful!

@lulu_ma did you swap your wedding band too? Do you feel ok with a new design? That’s all I worry about!

Are you changing metals? If so, I wouldn’t worry about it. Did you order the tester?

I think the tester is key! I just wonder that the reduction in finger coverage will be an issue.

Oops, I meant *if no

I would like to change from white gold to yellow and I’m already sick of getting the ring rhodium plated haha!

Yes I’ve ordered the tester!

What color is your stone? Just keep in mind that yellow gold bezel/ basket will add a hint of tint. For reference, my emerald cut is an F color.

Hmm ok.. it’s G in colour.
I’ll see how the tester looks!

Could you make the halo into a hidden halo, or are the stones too large to be set there?

I'd personally see if I could make the halo stones into a wedding band, and I'd maybe set one of the halo diamonds in a wedding band for my husband.

I like the idea of the yellow gold with tapered baguettes. I'd personally do single or double claw prongs to show the corners of the stone.

Hi everyone

The dummy ring has arrived. The Diamond is meant to be 3ct.
It’s definitely a different shape to my actually engagement ring however!
